Dahua has released several 8mp turrets with the 2831 model name, however, they sport the 1/2.7" sensors vs the 1/1.8" sensors in the 2831 bullet cams. Dahua is marketing these cams as "low illuminance". There are two fixed turrets - T and M models (the mounts look different and the T has plastic and metal indicated in the spec, vs all metal on the M, a closer inspection of specs is needed). There is also a varifocal model.

Was thinking that the vari might be just what some board members were looking for just bear in mind 15fps @ 4K (not an issue for most), no AI , no SMD and as fender & bigred stated 1/2.7 instead of the 1/1.8 and @ f2. Not dealbreakers for some but worth understanding.

This new cams can refer to the IPC-HFW2831T-ZS or IPC-HDBW2831R-ZS. They are lite models, good for low budget projects.

But no 1/1.8" Sensor :( At least ipcamtalk community knows how to distinguish good vs bad models. This will be interesting to watch, who will be the guinea pig to test this out? :p

The varifocal is interesting to me. @EMPIRETECANDY feel free to alert me if you get those in stock?

Has anyone tried the IPC-HDW2831T-ZS-S2 I see Andy you have them for sale on your aliexpress site now. How good or bad do you think they are? I may buy one to give it a go as I want something that has better night vision than my OLD dahua 3301 3mp models.

I haven't seen a review for that model yet. Its minimum illumination spec is 0.009 Lux.

There wasn't a turret model of the original 2831 series, but the other original models had a min illumination spec of 0.004 Lux (which is better for night vision).

The newer Dahua 4MP models that use the 1/1.8" image sensor have a min illumination spec of 0.002 Lux which seems to be the best for the price range IMO:

Thanks for the info the T5442TM is an interesting one. I really like the IPC-HDW2831T-ZS-S2 because of the vari focal and especially the turret shape, but now you point out the sensor size 1/2.7" I am moving away from that. Also just noticed it does not have audio but the fixed focal length HDW2831TM-AS-S2 has audo and the plastic version HDW2831T-AS-S2 but are all still 1/2.7". Then I noticed the HDBW2831R-ZAS a dome camera with the larger 1/1.8" sensor, audio and also 0.004 lux.

I suppose its really what I am trying to improve on, but mainly low light and also car/ face and numberplate reading where possible. I know its pretty much the holy grail that I want for the cheapest amount possible.

Mind you anything will be an improvement over the present ones. Just found the spec sheet for them, see below...

1/3 cmos generally aren’t good for low light. Forget the low end 8MP cameras For low light and go with the 5442, you’ll be glad you did.

I didn't think it was right to start a new thread and since we're talking about 8MP cameras, is there any indication Dahua is planning to release an eyeball 1831E?

If Dahua does make a S2 version of the 1831 I wonder if they’ll use a smaller image sensor like they did with the 2831 S2. Looks like it went from a 1/1.8” sensor (original version) down to a 1/2.7” sensor for the S2 version.

I noticed today the 1831E bullet is marked as discontinued now. I wonder if they're preparing to release an upgrade or something.

Interesting. By rule of thumb smaller sensor poorer low light but I have noticed some of the smaller sensors seem to have better low light illuminance. I wonder if the smaller sensors have different tech like BSI sensors in DSLR and mirrorless sensor cameras? Only guessing.

Definitely seems like some of the smaller sensors (like 1/3") have been revamped.
