Do I need an Intel i7 processor to run BI with about 25 cameras or will i5 do?

Hello,

I have about 20-25 IP cameras - LTS and Dahua at my property. I am in the process of moving away from an NVR towards Blue Iris (BI).

I believe I need a dedicated or semi-dedicated desktop to smoothly run Blue Iris (BI).

As it is the holiday season here in the U.S, I want to see if I can get a good deal on a new desktop, either pre-assembled, or I can buy the components and ask someone to assemble them.

I am wondering do I really need an i7 processor or will an i5 processor suffice?

I plan to use that desktop solely for Blue Iris, but I also want to future proof it, so if i7 is the way to go, then so be it.

I believe I also need a graphics card, etc.

Any advice is welcome. I do not want to shortchange and get a machine that will barely meet the computing requirements, but if I can save a bit, that will be great.

Thank you

I will keep looking and sharing on here and hopefully we can select one!

once I identify a processor as i7 - what do the 4 numbers after it mean eg i7-7700

is higher the better? e.g. 7700 is better than 3450 for example if there were such a model

thank you

Thank you @Q

it seems like these processors are quite powerful, especially the K models.

Is this necessary or recommended to run BI or would it be overkill?

Would a 'lesser' processor slow down, not be future proof?

I plan to view the Blue Iris (BI) feed remotely a couple of times a day for a few minutes each day when traveling, so not sure if that has anything to do with the hardware or just the network configuration.

Thank you!

I can enthusiastically recommend a Dell Optiplex 7040MT. Boost the memory up to 16GB, add an SSD (onto which do a clean Win10 Pro OS install) and use the drive it came with for Blue Iris data. This should cost you approximately $800.00

Thank you @Q

I will look into a Dell Optiplex 7040MT , maybe there are some deals

Why do you recommend the Dell Optiplex 7040MT over the Dell XPS8920 which I have referenced above?

Just curious, I am trying to learn.

Thank you!!

I run two (1) 7040MT's...I don't know anything about the XPS8920.

One note about the 7040MT: the case limits you to one (1) 3.5" drive and two (2) 2.5" drives.

i have 8gb memory and SSD for os and 8tb purple for cams 27 cam's

this is also on a 3rd gen cpu and i RDP into

i think you can get away with 8gb more is always nicer and it can be added at a later date
