DVR DS-7616NI-I2/16P Firmware corrupt / recovery

So after upgrading firmware I was unable to get back into the DVR DS-7616NI-I2/16P. I cannot change any settings in SADP, I can get to the web GUI but cannot login there either.

I went through the SADP password reset with tech support. Received the key file. SADP says pass reset success but the new pass does not work.

I connected a screen to the DVR and the usernames are all garbled. I'm guessing corrupted firmware.

So I've tried the TFTP method but looks like it's in a loop. Have tried different firmware versions. I can't find the version that's currently installed in case it's looking for the same one.

Thanks for posting - that may help others.
There have been a few similarly affected when updating to the NVR 4.x firmware from too early a 3.x version.

I'm guessing corrupted firmware.
I believe it's a database conversion error, the V4.x firmware not fully supporting enough older versions on the conversion.
