Is a GoPro good for dashcam use or is there something better?

Ive used mine (Hero4 Silver) on roadtrips making hyperlapse videos. Its decent quality except at night when it can get a bit grainy although you can mess with the settings to improve that a bit.

My only thing with that is theft. Someone sees it, smashes the window and takes it. Hardwired systems are a bit more secure in that field in that its harder to rip out the camera with the wires.

Another plus with hardwired systems is that they normally turn on when you get it without having to do anything. The GoPro would require you to turn it on each time.

Even if its plugged into the charger, it wouldn't necessarily turn it on when you start the key, at least that never worked with mine.
