Hi All,

Read many posts/threads with interest and looking for budget CCTV system, with minimum hassle, hence looking at Dahua 4208 8P 4KS2 NVR, with four cameras; either Dahua IPC-HDW2231TM-AS-S2, or Dahua N22AL12.

The N22AL12s seem to have decent reviews, but has anyone reviewed the IPC-HDW2231TM-AS-S2, because, on Aliexpress, it looks like there are only two sellers who don't hold these cameras in stock, but would have to get them manufactured, so delivery to UK would be about 6, or, 7 weeks?

Any help appreciated.

a good choice going with dahua, stick with a solid recommended vendor.
If you use Andy delivery should be less than 1 week.
On a NVR check and calculate the decoding capacity, the Bit rate that it can process. NVRs now seem to run out of processing before they run out of ports.

My standard welcome to the forum message.

Please read the IP Cam Talk Cliff Notes and other items in the IP Cam Talk Wiki. (read on a real computer, not a phone). The wiki is in the blue bar at the top of the page.

Read How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!) in the wiki also.

Quick start
1) If you do not have a wired monitored alarm system, get that first
2) Use Dahua starlight cameras or Hikvision darkfighter cameras if you need good low light cameras.
3) use a VPN to access home network (openVPN)
4) Do not use wifi cameras.
5) Do not use cloud storage
6) Do Not use uPNP, P2P, QR, do not open ports,
7) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
8) Avoid chinese hacked cameras (most ebay, amazon, aliexpress cameras(not all, but most))
9) Do not use reolink, ring, nest, Arlo cameras (they are junk), no cloud cameras
10) If possible use a turret camera , bullet collect spiders, dome collect dirt and reflect light (IR)
11) Use only solid copper, AWG 23 or 24 ethernet wire. , no CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum)
12) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
13) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 8ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
14) Use a router that has openVPN built in (Most ASUS, Some NetGear....)
15) camera placement use the calculator... IPVM Camera Calculator V3
16) POE list PoE Switch Suggestion List

if you are interested in International Dahua cameras, a forum member sells dahua (and some Hikvision) and ships world wide. You can read some of the members recommendations on his service. He also provides cameras to other forum member for evaluation and reviews.
you can email him for a quote, or purchase from his Aliexpress store or his Amazon store. The cameras are fully upgradable, he posts upgarde software when available.

Thanks, the decoding capacity for the 8 channel Dahua 4208 8P 4KS2 (from the datasheet) is 2ch@4K 30fps, 8ch@1080P 30fps and I'm looking to get 4 x 2MP cameras, so does that seem OK?

It's supposed to be an 8MP NVR, but that suggests that I wouldn't be able to use 4 x 8MP cameras, if I upgraded at some point?

Check out this forum vendor - @EMPIRETECANDY - there are good reasons why he is well used on here :
Thanks, I've sent Andy a message, because I could see from his website that he sold the varifocal 2231 model, but not the fixed lens versions.

I was looking for cheap and cheerful, and, maybe, upgrade in the future.

Update:

Decoding capacity (per specs) of 2ch@4k 30fps and 8Ch@1080P 30fps means the NVR can display 16MP at 30 fps across 8 channels, in any combination, so I could add 2 x 4MP cameras to 4 x 2MP cameras and display all at their full capacities, or exceed the MPs, but display at lower than capacity.

Also, the specs state the Record Rate of the NVR is 200Mbps, although the Bit Rate for recording says 16Kbps - 20Mbps Per Channel, which suggests a maximum of 160Mbps and not 200Mbps. Either way, it seems the NVR could record 8 x 8MP cameras at 30 fps each, although display at lower resolutions.

Hence, the Dahua 4208 - 8P - 4KS2 should be more than capable for my needs.

I'm also interested in a fix lens equivalent to the varifocal 2231. It does seem like the IPC-HDW2231TM-AS-S2 would fit the bill. Did you find another alternative? Is that what you went with?
