I have temporary mounted a HDW5231R-Z and a HFW5231E-Z5.
I'm looking for advice on optimization.
With the HDW5231R-Z i cant read license plates on daytime (i guess nighttime is out of question).

Here is the HDW5231R-Z (and a Ubiquiti for testing):

The cam is at door height but ~120" above the street.
The red dot is where i have the HFW5231E-Z5.

Here is a maps view.
Blue: ~14.5 m (48 ft)
Red: 11.6 m (38 ft)
Yellow: 15 m (50 ft)

Non moving car license plate is really good:

Daytime video and you cant read the license (don't skip he's coming back):

Night shoot of me from the HDW5231R-Z:

For comparison the Ubiquiti:

Me the test dummy (don't skip i run at the end):

Car passing by at night:

This is the paperboy at night. The car lights make the switch from night to day:
https://skulltronics.net/share/fixed/20181222_041410_HDW5231R-Z_Night_Paperboy.mp4

And the Ubiquiti on the paperboy. First night the cam switched. Second night not:

https://skulltronics.net/share/fixed/20181222_041413_UVC-G3_Night_Paperboy.mp4

And now the HFW5231E-Z5 stuff. The cam is not aligned (quick mount).
Zoomed Out:

Hi @MrGlasspoole

How's a facial ID image when a suspect is walking up the stairs?

Also if you have enough light during the night try it also in color mode.

@mat200, you can see me walking up the stairs in the first video.

Since the HDW5231R-Z is already a bit close and i cant zoom in, can i swap it to a HDW4231EM-ASE?
I'm worried that it is then even more close because of the 2.8 vs 2.7 mm. Or is 0.1 mm negligible?
Would 4" lower help, make a difference?

I wanted to test the HFW5231E-Z5 where i made the yellow dot but it was raining the whole day.
Problem with that place is the cable. The problem with the brick wall is that you cant run cables.

@MrGlasspoole Very nice!

Looks like you're getting a good angle and shot potential at the current placement.

I'd try the color mode and see what results you're getting.

note: there is the possibility that an more aware prowler will keep looking down during all of their approach - you typically only need one really good ID image for success, so they've have to be good to about keeping their head down on the approach.

The settings from my first posting where:
Exposure Mode: Auto
Exposure Auto Iris: On
Exposure 3D NR: On, Grade 50
Backlight: Off

Now in color mode:
Exposure Mode: Auto
Exposure Auto Iris: On
Exposure 3D NR: On, Grade 30

With backlight WDR 44
20181224_000611.jpg

With backlight WDR 45
20181224_000554.jpg
But what i really want to know is if its possible to get the license in daylight from where the cam is mounted?
Even if I'm not allowed to do it :puke:

By the way:
H.264H
1080p
12 fps
VBR
Quality 6
Bit rate 3584
IFrame 12

@looney2ns, you talk about nighttime? Because with the HFW5231E-Z5 during daytime its really good.

What could be better is the HDW5231R-Z.
The tree is a problem i guess.
Maybe 4" lower and 4" more to the left will make it better?

HDW5231R-Z front:

And the car from back with HFW5231E-Z5:

And the car from back with HFW5231E-Z5:

And parking with the HDW5231R-Z:

Two cars with the HFW5231E-Z5 (front and back):

HFW5231E-Z5 Bicycle (good ID):
https://skulltronics.net/share/fixed/20181224_134111_HFW5231E-Z5_Bike.mp4

The HFW5231E-Z5 at night. Front license has allot of reflection. From the back its OK after the car lights go off:
https://skulltronics.net/share/fixed/20181224_234620_HFW5231E-Z5_Night_License_Reflection.mp4

I thought maybe i can mount the HFW5231E-Z5 in a way that on daytime it like it is now and during nighttime i can zoom in (and switch settings) where it needs to be to get the license?

I have the HFW5231E-Z5 now at the other position:

Before red 13 meters (43 ft) and now blue 15,5 meters (51 ft):
mount2.gif
20181228_140834_HFW5231E-Z5.jpg
More of our lot and the stairs. But now here the license plate is not really readable:
https://skulltronics.net/share/fixed/20181228_155800_HFW5231E-Z5_License_Front.mp4

Before it was much better:
https://skulltronics.net/share/fixed/20181224_143211_HFW5231E-Z5_License_Front_and_Back.mp4

Why that?

And here some videos of booth cams with the new position:
