Bought a used pc with xeon e3-1230v2 and 16Gb ram with intentions of running blue iris with 3 cameras (looking at dahua starlights) and also run plex media server transcoding no more than 2 1080 streams at once. After purchase I read on the forum that if you don't have quicksync you might as well throw the pc in the trash. Is that true? Should I try to sell the processor and get an i5-i7 ? Looks like the xeon is going for $110-120 on ebay.

The E3 has a 69W TDW which places it in line with many of the i5 and i7 processors in that chipset. It's also 4 cores, 8 threads so also a little more powerful assuming blue iris is multi threaded.
While quicksync is definitely nice to have, the E3 should have more than enough processing power to do what you need.
I have my BI setup (6x 1080P cams with direct-to-disk) on an E3-1220 and it rarely goes over 20%.

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to hang on to it for now. Its running plex server like a dream so i'll see how blue iris does on it.
