Let us say I have an NVR with 8 channels and I already have 8 cams connected with it. Now I need to connect 2 more cams. Is it possible to connect a 4 port POE switch with the existing NVR and have the cams connect to this POE switch which then writes back to NVR. So in a way POE switch provides extension of ports.

In my experience it doesn't work. Essentially only one port works on the POE switch corresponding to uplink connection with NVR. Should all ports work OR it is working as designed and I will have to buy an NVR with higher channel capacity.

If you mean - can you configure more than 8 cameras on a Hikvision 8-channel NVR such as a 7608N-E2 or 7608N-E2/8P - then the answer is no. It's an 8-channel NVR, end of, for Hikvision.
You would need something like a 7616N-E2/8P or 7616N-E2
Other brand can NVRs have a different way of splitting up their handling capacity vs the number of channels, for example by trading off lower bitrate/resolution against an increased number of channels.
