Thanks for all your great reviews looney. What is your executive summary on this cam compared to the 2MP varifocal starlights? BTW, put some corn in that feeder for the deer.

Thanks To looney's support, I also get a 16 ports POE nvr for him to test too, he catched a cold, so we wait when he is fine. Later this month can bring a multi-lens camera and a new bullet cam to check.

I like it. It' has an obviously better picture, easier to ID faces and other items. I don't have a 4k display of any kind. I'm simply viewing on a 1080p display. So I'm sure a 4k monitor would do it much more justice.

It does use a lot of horsepower so, be sure you have an NVR that can handle it. Or if your using BlueIris, and more than 2 or 3 of these cams, be sure the BI pc has adequate horsepower. This one cam added to my BI system raise's the CPU usage from 10-15% to 25-30% with the console closed, and from 25-30% to 40-55% with console open.

The Blue Iris mobile app on my 3 yr old android phone, struggles to play the live feed from this camera, and the recorded clips.
Even tho I have the bitrate set to 512 on the server and in the app. I've seen the cpu hit 75% while playing back a clip. And of course your network needs to be up to snuff. This is all with the bitrate set to 4096 in the cam.

That "feeder" is a rain gauge for my weather station. ;) There is plenty of corn in the back yard for them.

These two just walked away from the feeder.

Nice little review sir... what processor you using in your bi system? That is a big jump in processing power especially if you are running at 512BR. Could just imagine 4 of these cameras running at 2048 would kill that system. But the picture quality is sweet. Be interesting to see how the new nvr your testing handles these plus your other cameras. I guess it wouldn't be hard to add these all to the new nvr and compare

Bi setup is in my sig. When I referred to 512bps, that is what I'm using to remotely view via the BI app. In the test, the cam was set to 3840x2160, 4096 bitrate, 15 frames per second, CBR.

How about your opinion of the night performance and clarity? That one video was not all that detailed.
A lot of reviews on the forum say 2mp is still better than higher mp for identifying perps at night.
I'd love to move to higher mp for better resolution but can't have the nigt image any worse.
What is your opinion on this cam vs the 2mp starlights videos at night for identifying people in videos?

I have had this camera since the start of the year. It isn't usable in low-light at night in forced colour mode, unlike my 2MP Starlight. Its IR is however decently powerful.

I have a 1080p H265 PTZ in addition to this running in BI. I have an 8 core -16 thread AMD 2700x and it sits around 2-3% with the console open and will jump as high as 6% when both cams are recording and being viewed in real-time (both are on the highest bitrate settings at 15FPS). Watching a recording back in high-speed it will jump up to 10%.

One of my monitors it is hooked up to is a 43" 4k model. It looks really good full screen on that, but also still looks decent on my 2560 x 1080 ultrawide - the digital zoom on top of being fully zoomed optically is quite usable.

Mine is max zoomed to about 50-100 yards away. This is on a dark cloudy night. I think some of the IR is reflecting off the nearby trees out of camera causing some glare (see pic 2), but it gets the bridge good.

This picture is from a different camera that shows how much IR is hitting the area (on the right).

For being 8mp, I was surprised at how well it does at night. But it is not nearly as good as the 5231 2mp series.
    Here are two comparison shots.

Would you mind sharing the BI web server settings you use?

I have no problems with mine on 1024 Kbps, but then again the upload speed on my fibre connection is 550 times faster than that and my phone has the fastest CPU currently available with 6GB of RAM, so I'd be shocked if it did :winktongue:

On the phone it uses ~4-12% CPU and up to 1.45GB of RAM.

My problem is at home, on my own wifi. Not tried it away from home yet. I suspect it may be my phone.

Ah, well if your old phone only has a couple of gigs of RAM or less that could be the problem. It could also just be the CPU isn't up to it, given the high utilisation you are seeing, but that could also be a side effect of the OS having kittens over the lack of RAM.

    It has 3gigs of ram. Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 801 Quad-Core Processor up to 2.5 GHz

My wife's phone does the same...with 4gigs of ram.

Hmm, well I'd expect that to handle it better than that, then again my previous phone with its Chinese 10 core CPU (which is still quite a bit more powerful than that particular Snapdragon CPU) and 4GB of RAM didn't like that camera on my WIFI either and wouldn't play clips back smoothly *shrug*

I dunno, that 8MP does look pretty darn good...
