Sorry for my question but what is the difference apart from the price?
Also the S2 has slightly better low light ability i Have them both and they both are great. You should also use more lighting at night and these cameras show great detail at night in color with using bright white 5000k lights.

Is there a way the varifocal will tell you on the screen what mm you're looking at? i wanted to use this camera in various locations and adjust the focal point to see if i needed to order 2.8,3.6,6mm, etc cameras. the IPVM tool doesnt do it for me.

There's a multi-step way to do it:
On your camera, go to the Zoom and Focus tab and hover your mouse over the current zoom setting. The browser should display a value for a few seconds. It was a PITA to grab a screenshot, but if you look closely below (it snapped the screen right as the value was fading out), you'll see the value is 300. Write that down.

You also need to know the highest zoom value, so zoom the camera all the way in and record that value. For my camera (older 5231R-Z), that value is 1400.

Take those values and click Tools > Focal Lens Calculator at the top of IPCAMTALK.COM (blue menu bar at top of this browser tab).

For the top left, enter in your camera specs. They will differ from mine below. For the T2231T-ZS, your Fmax would be 13.5, Fmin would be 2.7, and Zmax would be whatever value max zoom value you got from that camera.

Then go to the bottom right and put your zoom value in the Zsp box and it should tell you the MM.

So for my camera, a zoom value of 300 = 4.7mm.

thanks aristo! the 2231T goes from 0-2343 when i max it out and hover my mouse over the slider. so if my calculations are correct we get the following:

2.8mm = 21
3.6mm = 195
6mm = 715
12mm = 2017

here's a photo of the camera on the side of the house, my goal is to cover the two windows directly on the wall below the camera. i figured i'd need a 6mm for this shot. this is the 2231T factory defaults.

I think to most, this camera is the "2231 upgrade"... So they don't want the original IPC-HDW2231R-ZS, they want this new IPC-HDW2231T-ZS-S2. :)

Do you know what the R (in IPC-HDW2231R-ZS) and T (IPC-HDW2231T-ZS-S2) stand for?
Anyone ever answer this question... ?? and where can I find a chart for these. Cliffs shows things a bit different

So still 2231 for all around ?
I agree with @Walrus about the 5442 being the best fixed-lens model. If you haven't already run into it, here's the review thread:

Good morning group members,

I purchased one of these cameras from the Amazon store to do some testing around new home build.

My question is this - Do you foresee future cameras with these same capabilities shrinking in size?

This camera has a large footprint, which I feel safe to mount under a porch or soffit horizontally. I had plans to purchase two more for vertical mounting directly to the side of house but am hesitant to take such a big chunk of brand new siding to put such a large PFA weather proof box if future camera will decrease in size. I am not a fan of the attached mount style which is why I would be doing a vertical mount.

The one vertical mount would be there to capture three points of first floor window entry into my house but the other vertical mount would be to capture rear points of entry and backyard so this camera would foot the bill for my needs in the backyard.

Just wanted to know what others thought about this. I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge and inexperience.

I kind of doubt that there will be a smaller varifocal turret anytime soon, but who knows.

This form factor came out a few years ago. Dahua has gone on to shrink the size of their fixed-lens turrets in newer camera series, but those series don’t have a varifocal turret model at all. :(

I found a siding mount block with barely enough room behind it to hide the camera pigtail. I liked its look better than the normal junction box.
