In computer/home network security and cameras what are the pros and cons of the two? I wondered about this late last night as I was setting up my POE switch and relearning what my old router was capable of.

With my router and probably with most nowadays, you could block the cameras or devices by their mac addresses or ip address. In this case, you would still see the device connected to the router but it cannot access the internet whereas if you setup a VLAN on a smart switch, the switch prevents any activity reaching the router, thus freeing up overhead for the router to do other tasks. Am I right in thinking that?

Enlighten my young grasshopper ass.

On a small home network the overhead isn't enough to make any difference at all.
