I was reading over the Wiki and saw it says to use a VPN instead of Port Forwarding: How to Secure Your Network (Don't Get Hacked!)

I know on Android I can set up a VPN for my entire phone but there may be times where I don't want that. Is there a way to have only blue iris go through a vpn while say all my browser traffic etc. goes over the regular cell network without making a pit stop at my home network? Or is it all or nothing?

Would a VPN increase phone data usage if everything is tunneled through it? Or is the only cost added latency?

Any alternatives to securing?

Use OpenVPN.
The OpenVPN phone app can be started and stopped at will.
It would have very small data overhead if left on.
If you are using Public Wifi on your phone, then it's best to have your phone get the internet through your home connection.

My general VPN post

There are two types of VPN, do not get them confused.
The type depends on where the traffic conversation originates

1) origination: local home network, destination the internet.
This type of VPN is purpose is to hides your activity from the internet, it is outbound, it normally costs a monthly fee to use. Direction is from your home PC to the internet, going to your bank, google, porn sites,,,, this not what you want

2) Origination: the internet world wide web, destination: your home network
This VPN type is used to provide a secure connection onto your local network, in bound to you local home network, from your office computer, your cell phone in your car, tablet at the coffee shop.. This is what you want, it does not have a monthly fee and is normally completely free. OpenVPN is this type of VPN.

If you home internet provider is a cellular network, then DDNS (dynamic Domain Name System) may not work, the DDNS is needed for most Inbound VPN services (OpenVpn), so OpenVPN may not work for you.

Thank you both for the responses. My concern was that I don't always want to tunnel my phone traffic back to my home just so I can use Blue Iris. I also want it to be as easy to use as possible from my wife's phone. I can't see her fumbling trying to enable a vpn, check blue iris, disconnect from VPN.

There are also times where I am deep in the woods struggling to maintain any sort of data connection. If a VPN adds overhead to the connection then it may not be desirable in this type of situation either.

What I was really hoping for was that the BI app could auto tunnel through a vpn to my home when in use and then close the connection when the app is closed. That doesn't seem possible though.

My wife is 70+ YO, She uses OpenVPN with ease, on both her android phone and her chromebook. I currently have three icons setup, Connect VPN, Display BlueIris, disconnect VPN. You can write a script to do this but i prefer the three bottoms. I do not like writing scripts because I have to maintain them, I am retired and lazy...

My wife has an iPhone and I've never done any IOS development or ever even used IOS to be honest. I just can't see her screwing around with VPN each time, It would probably be just enough effort where she's already not overly invested in checking the cameras so this would be the final push to stop using the app all together.

I think there is a thread discussing using tasker to do this.
You thinking an old thread or a newer one?

It's no different than opening or closing any other app. Click to open OPVN, wait 2-3 secs for it to connect, app minimizes, click to open BI Ap, done.
