Need a system for 18 2.1 mp cameras and someone I know is upgrading thier workstations and is offering me one. They have the xeon sandybridge e5 1603 or 1620 and some have 1650 . which one would you recommend i take. ( I believe that i can upgrade the chip so if there is a better sandybridge xeon than these) thanks

Are you getting these for free? otherwise there are much better options..

even free most xeon systems consume several hundred dollars in electricity every year at idle and require giant battery backups to get marginal runtimes.. check power consumption; they give away old xeons for a good reason.

Those are sandybridge which aren't bad on electric consumption but the person doesn't pay electric anyways so not a consideration

the CPU has a TDP of 130-140W, compared to an i7 of like 85W.. it reduces battery run time even if your not paying the electric bill.

and compared to my hardware NVR that runs under 20W its pathetic..

they are not in a raid configuration, so one drive is almost always asleep while the other is being written.

thanks . wasnt sure if there was really a significnt difference between the 1620 and the 1650
