I've been considering using either one of these to cut down on ads. I notice Raspberry pi prices have gone through the roof due to chip shortage but I see other alternatives at a much lower price, some even able to use cases meant for Raspberry. How has your experience been with AdGuard, Raspberry pi, or hardware alternatives for this?

I'm ok
You don't say what you use for a router/firewall.

I run PFsense for a firewall, and use PFblockerNG for ad/spam/hacker blocking.

@gwminor48, I run PiHole on two RPi 4B for two and a half years with no problems. Very easy to update. Every now and then I have to go in and locate which URLs are being blocked to allow a few sites to operate correctly - those few sites can then be whitelisted.
I use gravity-sync to sync the blocklists between the two PiHole instances that I run - GitHub - vmstan/gravity-sync: The easy way to synchronize the DNS configuration of two Pi-hole 5.x instances.

on one of the PiHole I run OpenVPN and on the other I run WireGuard VPN.
