Had a little while off from divulging in the camera world.

However I'm back and on the hunt for another couple of cameras.

Just in the process of renovating a new house and get the pleasure of getting to install my system and a few additions from scratch properly.

I'm in the market for another 2 cameras and wanting options on which of the 2 above cameras is the bet option.

I know one is vari and the other fixed which I'm not to concerned about.

I currently have 3 x 5231R-ZE cameras to utilise and also 1 dahua ptz dome and also a crappy huisun ptz dome that still works!!

Along with some old haka hikvision bullets.

My plan is to add another 2 cameras to the system
Deploy the dahua ptz high up as an overview cam which gives me flexibility

New extension on the rear has 2 purpose built soffit locations for 2 cameras.

This will free up the old hiks to be able to used for something else I have up my sleeve where the older technology wont hinder what I'm trying to do with them.

So as a recap I need options on which of the 2 models in the title is currently the better and also if there is any other that I have missed.

I'm not on a budget per se and may even get 4 new cams.

Im specifically looking for the best available right now that offers good value.

I'm like a kid at Christmas with this one as it's the first time I'll be able to run the install without having to worry about the wiring or routes of the wiring.

I made a table with all features I'm interested in, then things became more clear:

-Top notch 7842/7442/5842 - 7442 has best night vision but is very expensive, only bullet or dome, no turret yet.
-5442 has best value but fixed lens, vario is brand new and not buyable at the moment
-2231/3241 same as 5231

Thanks for the info
Need to do more reading.

Once you take a break for a while and come back it's hard work trying to catch back up and that's only 3/4 months!!

Last I was really on was when the 5442 came out and they were ironing out some of the issues.

IIRC, the 0.002 lux min illumination on the 2231 S2/3241 should be a good bit better than the 5231’s 0.006 lux.

That is true. They also lack some IVS features 5231 had. I think that's why 5231 is still not discontinued. It' still a a great cam, I have two of them.

Quite like the look of the 5442

Just undecided

I've been looking for comparison of the 5442 and the 2231 S2/3241 but cnt seem to find any

Hey what did you end up going with?

I am still having a hard time debating the 5442 and the 3241.

Don't know which is better

They are almost same in terms of night vision.
Just that 3241 is 2MP and 5442 is 4MP.
And 5442 have more AI options.

I have both the 5442, turrets and a bullet, as well as three 3241s. The 5442 has superior low light performance both in color and in black and white. That said, the 3241 is no slouch either but is 2MP while the 5442 is 4MP as Jomsha said. It all comes down to the specifics of the installation and what you need the camera to do. Of course budget enters into it as well and the 3241 is less expensive.

I will say that both need to be fine tuned for each location they may be in and that is true for every camera. Exposure, gain, contrast, brightness and so on. Leaving any camera in "auto" is a plan for failure.
