Just got this camera (IPC-HDW5442TM-AS) and I'm struggling to figure out how to use SMD. I've got it enabled under the "Event>Smart Motion Detection" page but I'm not seeing any recording on the NVR when I search for events. Does anyone have this working correctly that could help out?

Like wittaj has mentioned, use WDR SPARINGLY, but I think WDR is your best bet here. What do the rest of y'all think?

Yes, VERY good post :-) I actually have a Starlight zoom bullet camera (Z5E) that is doing LPR and so I'm familiar with the whole manual shutter range and gain. LIFESAVER lol. Been able to capture plates very well and OpenALPR was working fantastic until they decided to no longer be free...so...

What bitrate (fps) are y'all running at? I've run my 2 megapixel STARLIGHT's at 1080p 22fps 10240kbps

Ok, last question, hopefully. Bitrate options seem to be capped at 8192 in the settings. I know the specs list 20480 as the max bitrate so I'm confused. I'd like to use something at least higher than 8192. I'm using the latest firmware from Dahua...

I'm assuming "Advanced 3D" and "Advanced 2D" are in regards to noise reduction. Any thoughts on those settings?

Also, new to the T5442TM and does anyone have any experience with LDC or Defog? These are new settings to me.

Agree with fenderman. You need two cameras. That's what I wound up doing after trying to cover the area with an 8mp

Just make sure and check if you have gain controls. Hikvision stupidly disabled them on their last firmware update . Not sure about the Swann rebrands. (Swann rarely updates or fixes anything).

Oh, on the contrary, I totally agree, that's why I'm running Dahua's now :) Those Swann/Reolink cameras are only good down to a certain lighting level, which is where Dahua picks up the torch and Hikvision, and carry on where the other companies revel in mediocrity, lol. I have Swann NHD-817's...
