Why this FW was posted under 5442 cameras section on official Dahua web site? It also sounds strange to me that applying official FW could brick the camera just because it's branded differently. Branding is in software, not in hardware. That's why I asked Andy to comment.

VBR is not lacking in quality, it's a bug how this camera handles VBR settings. I.e. VBR 8192 kbps setting will get you actual bitrate about twice lower, so this results in terrible quality. When you get to actual bitrate of 8192 by jacking up VBR settings to about 14-16k then you'll see...

530-580 KB/s provides awful level of artifacts for 4MP, so whatever logic is - it does not work very good. Another 2MP looking at the same spot at different angle has 490-520 KB/s and that is good, but that's for twice lower resolution. There's definitely something wrong here.

I guess it's more like "how do you guys get desirable bitrate on this camera with H265 VBR?" My way doesn't seem right. Also setting it to highest max doesn't seem right as after certain bitrate there's no visual advantage but bandwidth and storage consumption will increase.
