Thanks @Ssayer and @dmcIPCAM. I Googled Cooper's Hawk and it seems like that is the predator bird. Although I can't see the front of the bird to verify its stripy orange chest, the rear matches the images I saw.

Prey swallowed whole is always ingested head first. So, my guess is the mouse quickly suffocates, drowns, or is paralyzed on the way to the owl's stomach.

That was amazing. I would have never guessed there was a guardrail under all of that brush (although the black and yellow end caps should have been a clue). That was a lot to remove, and it was a pretty big guardrail. That reminds me of overgrown bushes and trees that block the line of site...
