It's an 8 core/16 thread Ryzen 7 1700, 64GB RAM, 6 IronWolf spinners, and a GTX 750 Ti (6 watts at idle, give or take) to keep power consumption at a minimum. The system runs through a UPS (uptime, right?) which reports ~75 watts when I'm not doing anything in particular, up to ~120 when there's...

You have that backwards, fenderman. Unless you run those bare metal machines at 100% all the time, you're losing out vs. virtualization. My single VM host replaces ~5 bare metal servers. It's absolutely a power savings vs. running everything bare metal. It's not even close. Welcome to the 21st...

There is very minor lag over VNC, but this isn't an application like gaming where response time is critical. A small bit of mouse lag, but that's it.

I can view the feeds over web on my local network, or by simply opening a VNC console through proxmox like you say. I haven't bothered with GPU passthrough for that VM, simply no need. Speaking now from almost a year of experience, Blue Iris runs just fine in a VM, and it runs just fine on an...

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying. I'm now firmly convinced that BI runs just fine in a virtual machine, having done so for several months.

It's got 64GB, with 24GB allocated to the freenas guest (passing through 6x3TB drives running in RAIDZ2, it's RAM-thirsty), 16GB for the Server 2016/Blue Iris host, and the remaining 24GB spread among various Ubuntu stuff. I think there's still around 12GB free, and I don't expect to need any more.

Proxmox is totally free, there are a few nag prompts, but nothing that interferes with the functionality of the host. I think they have special subscriber-only repos, but I'm not sure they contain anything you can't get elsewhere. edit: No, never tried unRAID. My host was originally intended to...

The way you keep saying 'running a VMS' and 'never run a vms' is leading me to believe that you may not understand what virtualization technology actually is/does. My Ryzen Proxmox host is happily chugging away with several h.265 cameras in a Server 2016 instance, running a freenas instance in...

Which issues have you seen while running BI in a virtual machine? I'll check my power consumption when I get home, the server is plugged into a beefy UPS system with watt readout. edit: 125 watts at the wall, for the server (4 sticks ram, 6 spinners, 1 nvme drive, gtx 750ti) under normal load...

Sorry, if you're suggesting that I run Blue Iris in a bare-metal OS installation, that's never going to happen. Virtualization simply offers too many advantages - it really is revolutionary technology. The 'Blue Iris and any vms' phrasing is a little confusing, I apologize if you weren't...

"AMD lags far behind Intel" is no longer true. See UserBenchmark: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 vs Intel Core i7-6700 - the Ryzen is the same price, but has much better multithreaded performance. For a VM host machine, that's huge. I appreciate that you're an Intel fan, but it's not the right choice for...

For now tasiv, I'm just running as admin still. I will report the issue, but for now, admin will have to do. Fenderman, running services as a reduced privilege user (when possible) is security 101. Think about apache, there is a reason it uses a special www-data user instead of just running as...

I'm just trying to follow best practices, running everything at the lowest privileges necessary for it to work. Does Blue Iris really require admin? I could swear I read somewhere here that it needs to run under an account other than Local System in order to access network shares, and in...

Howdy, I'm running Blue Iris on a Windows Server 2016 (desktop experience) VM. Everything works fine when I run as non-service, and everything works OK when running under the regular service account, other than NAS access. I created a non-privileged user for Blue Iris, and have the service...
