Dual lan

So I got to thinking about plugging my ip camera into the extra lan jack on my blue iris server.
i figured it would off load all my camera traffic and not bog down any internet traffic or Nas file streams. I did a bit of searching on the topic. I noticed someone stating i could get the same results by connected the server to the network switch and not direct to the router . Keeping the camera traffic of the router. So I went ahead and did that. So my question is . Is the dual lan the better way to do it ?

Most people's camera traffic (my own included) isn't enough to be noticeable on a properly functioning gigabit network unless you are specifically measuring in an attempt to notice it. It is true that some home routers aren't capable of properly handling gigabit traffic even though they may have gigabit network ports. Some are capable. Either way if you are keeping the router out of the path taken by camera traffic to the BI server, then you should have nothing to worry about.

A second network interface for camera traffic can help with performance, but realistically the main reason anybody isolates their camera traffic this way is for security, to be certain the cameras can't reach the internet or their other LAN devices. Whether or not this makes it better is something only you can decide.
