Can I connect a non-ip camera device to a hikvision NVR? Yes, sounds strange - but...

I have a situation where I fiber optic to a gate at the front of the property (fiber because it was well over 600 ft). on the gate side I will be putting a Hikvision camera (still deciding on model) and also (currently connected) a internet capable gate controller. Both of these devices connect to a Trendnet hardened switch out at the gate.

I wanted to design my IP camera system to put all the cameras on their own subnet to separate them from the rest of the network so I could build some firewalls between systems (good idea? Bad idea?), but this situation is causing me some trouble.

What would the NVR do with an Ethernet connection coming from the gate that had 2 devices, a camera and the gate controller? Would it act like a Ethernet switch and allow the gate controller to access the internet? If not, I would have to add another switch and use my 2nd fiber (utilizing bidi sfp's) to give me another subnet out there just for the gate controller. Not out of the question, but a bunch more hardware to worry about.

Should I not worry about putting the camera's/NVR on its own subnet? I read that for inbound access I should use a VPN which might cause a problem for the owner, but I haven't' even gotten there yet.

If I had only 1 subnet and brought this connection into the switch instead of the NVR the camera would still find the NVR even know it's not connected directly? Does the NVR ports create their own subnet?

I guess I have to get this equipment and start seeing how it all works to answer a lot of these questions, but I figured I'd ask.

Yeah, this one is kinda weird or maybe not. Would think this scenario has happened more than once.

Thanks,

Maybe you can segregate the networks with vlans so they can still use the switch and fiber run.
