Continuous Recording to One Drive or Split?

Hey! I've got my BI server and 9 cameras up and running, looking good. I have 2 HHD and 2 or 3 cameras that continuously record. On review of drive status, is see that they continuously record to one drive, while the other drive is getting the clips. I will likely split these so I don't lose footage if one drive fails, but is it really a burden on that single drive that would make it fail prematurely? Both are WD Purple. Thanks!

Every drive will fail at some point.

Best practice is to spread the cameras over the drives so that you have coverage on each side in the event one goes out (which it will).

Meaning if you have 8 cameras (2 on each side of the house), then put one camera from each side of the house on one drive the other camera from each side on the other drive. That way when one dies, you still have some partial coverage.

Many will put the front on one drive and the back on the other and then they lose an entire side.

Obviously that is simplistic, but you get the idea.

Yep, got it. Thanks!

Just upgraded an old drive I had been using for BI. The old drive was an antique 3TB unit from 2011! Just upgraded to a 18TB WD Purple drive. Copying the old files over now.

Agree that any drive can fail. Just use one that is independent of your OS or the BI install drive. The new drive is dedicated ONLY to BI backup. It's being fed from 19 cameras across my ranch and there is still a potential to add a few more cameras.

BTW - The BI system and all the camera paid for them selves recently after a vehicle hit my property in an accident. Several thousand dollars in damage and captured it all on continuous High Def. The driver was found and is paying for all the repairs.
