Odd camera behavior

Yes and basically their p2p ecosystem was vulnerable. They issued major changes (like killing SmartPSS) and FW updates summer of 2024 to alleviate it and their P2P now goes with AWS servers

Long term you're going to want to get off Lorex cloud.
Ask your provider to supply a modem, just a modem, with pass thru capabilities and you'll control your own network with your own router.
Buy a mid level Asus that has built in OpenVPN and WireGuard and use one of those VPNs for remote access

We have a wonderful AT&T Wi-Fi gateway, they don't offer a modem only, at least in our area. Did I mention we have VERY little options for internet?

So, I would have to add another router to be able to manage devices on the network beyond their equipment

Yes.

Even with their all-in-one device, it shoukd be possible to set it in pass thru mode so your router can control your network.

Do you know the model of the ATT device (sticker)

And what is the model of your NVR?

IP Passthrough is what ATT calls it

Look over the routers and make sure the one you choose has WireGuard VPN (Its faster and less hassle than OpenVPN)
I'm not a networking/router expert. But I'd probably go with the RT-AX88U-Pro fwiw

I looked at the Asus website, unless I'm missing it, nowhere in the specs or features for any model I looked at listed WireGuard.

Scroll and look harder Luke. Use the Force
You would think you could use the site search function or even the good old page search (CTRL + F) to locate anything to do with WireGuard, but nope and it's buried 1/2 way down the product page under advanced VPN. NOT very intuitive as far as I'm concerned. One must go through ALL models to verify if it has the feature.

Either way, the model you suggest is out of my budget currently - especially after buying a shitload of cameras. And it seems a little overkill for what I need especially with the speeds AT&T provides to our modest 1100 sq ft home. I would have to keep it under $150 when I do purchase.

Do what you want. Personally I won;t cheap out on security of most any kind.

You dont have to do anything. Keep doing what you're doing

I get what you are saying, but I am at a disadvantage since my knowledge of network security and VPNs are very sparse and/or outdated. It's easy to get frustrated when you don't have a grasp on the subject. I also don't have the budget for the recommended device at the current time, so I either wait or find a device that will do the job within my budget.

It is easy to overthink a VPN. I was there once too. It is really simple.

In the router, you simply check the box to use it/turn it on. Then it will have you create DDNS, set a username and password and you export out the certificate to go onto your mobile device. It is literally that simple.

Their current model of that is showing OpenVPN included. Just cheaper on Amazon
OpenVPN is very good and widely used. Its just slower
