Is the DS-7608NI-M2/8P a reasonable, current, mid range, 8 camera NVR choice for a home system?

Monitoring only. I don't need face recognition. I do need an input for a driveway crossing sensor that I have.

I've had a Dahua NVR and 6 cameras for years. It finally packed up recently. I never liked it much compared to the Hikvision system I had at my other house. The software is just crap. I took a chance on the second tier Chinese brand after having the Hikvision, which I was happy with. No that it has packed up, I'm ready to go back to Hik. But there are so many models out there, I'm wading through the specs to get something that is current and decent.

I also need suitable Hik cameras to replace my Dahua's, which I have never been able to get to work with the Hik NVR that I tested them with recently, in ONVIF mode. That's another question. Any recommendations for a Hik turret, say 4-8MP, that has decent night performance, I'd be happy to listen to.

get a dahua DHI-NVR608H-16-XI with EmpireTech IPC-Color4K-T 8MP 1/1.2" CMOS Full-color Fixed-focal Warm LED Turret Security Camera if decent light or EmpireTech IPC-T54IR-AS-S3 1/1.8" CMOS 4MP IR Fixed-focal Turret Network Camera if light is lower.
use dahua cams on dahua nvr you cant go wrong.

i hate hikvision, hikvision used to be good 10 years ago, i had a hikvision system then and thought better than dahua, i got a new hikvision system 12 months ago, hated the crap out of it, couldnt configure cameras properly, too many settings and configs, got an ew dahua, setup same day and working flawlessly where i gave up on the hikvision after a months of stuffing around with it. never will i use hikvision again.

new NI-M2 series is OK..
there is AcuSense line with NXI-I2...
And newest AcuSeek line with NXI-I2(or-I4) /VPRO
Both with extra AI capabilities on NVR side...

I always recommend to buy 16 channels NVR to have space to grow...
For home cameras HIK have latest ColorVu 3.0 (G3) cams..

4Mpx models will have much better night performance that 6 or 8 Mpx..

My Dahua NVR fried itself and my Hikvision NVR won't recognise my Dahua cameras properly. The cameras are at least 5 years old but they were good Starlight models back then and I was happy with them. Do you think the new Dahua NVR will work okay with the old cameras or do you think I should spend the extra money and installation effort on new Dahua cameras as well?

I actually can't find this model. Only DHI-NVR608H-64-XI. Overkill. I only need an 8 channel NVR. I'd prefer inbuilt POE.

I second this. I installed a HIK Vision system about a year ago and I'm still installing it because things keep going awry. The system barely works as it should. If I glance at it wrong, something stops working and I have to set it up again. Installation of the HIK Vision doorbell cam took months because nowhere do they mention it won't function properly if you connect it directly to your HIK Vision NVR. A month ago, HIK Connect on browsers (any browser on any PC) stopped showing video. I still can't figure out what went wrong. One of the biggest annoyances is there's no continuity between the NVR's interface, HIK Connect, iVMS (their PC app), their phone app, and the user interfaces built into the cameras. Things are named differently and put on different pages everywhere. I wish I had gone with something else.
