Trying to view my new-old-stock Defender HD cameras remotely. App no longer works, can't get IP address thing to work.

I've been dealing with this for weeks now (bit by bit, because its so infuriating a lot of times) and can't figure it out. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

My dad has some "Defender HD 1080p" cameras that I finally installed recently, but the problem is that they are apparently so old that the app won't work - even after going back and forth with tech support for a week. And also after learning about port forwarding etc., which lead to me getting a "plug-in needed" pop up from what I was hoping would be the IP page with my cameras on it. I guess because the DVR software is too old for the browser??? I have no idea. Installing the plug-in didn't do anything. I am about at my wit's end with this.
Any help is much appreciated!

Old DVRs use outdated browser plugins that modern browsers don’t support, so you’ll likely need IE mode, a legacy client app, or RTSP/VLC—or replace the system.
