    Help with processor recommendations

Also, I would add that recent-model Dell OptiPlex business systems are quite power-frugal at idle. Example, a standard SSD-equipped Core i7 that's booted and idle will pull like 16 watts at the wall, according to a Kill-O-Watt power meter. What I don't really like about the standard...

    Help with processor recommendations

I have an i9-9900K with a GTX1660 assisting, and can verify it would not even come close to handling that. My advice is to go with at least double the CPU you think you need based on the recording stats, so you have tons of headroom when you want to play back all your cams at once. Here's my...

    IR Illuminators in 2019

The three IR-200s I have are pretty focused. One sec, I'll do a quick demo with the idle one... This video starts with a Hikvision camera at minimum IR output (can't be turned completely off in B/W mode), then at 50%, then at 100%. Then I throw on the CMvision IR-200, and last I switch to...

    IR Illuminators in 2019

CMVision IR-200 is one commonly-available model with a very strong and very focused beam. Also check out this thread: Automotive IR emitter You'll need to scrounge up your own sufficiently-potent 12V power brick. For my test, I hooked it up to a 6-amp brick I had laying around. With all spot...

Also, they offer a lot of leverage that could be used by a vandal if they're within reach. I had a guy attempt to tear down a dome camera this year.

False motion detection due to rain at night

Do you have an additional POE cable routed to that location? You could slap up a retired IR-equipped network camera up just as an IR source, or a POE IR. I see some on Amazon. Might need a makeshift diffuser to spread out the beam, like a piece of frosted plastic such as a milk jug.

False motion detection due to rain at night

That's what I'd do, add a separate IR illuminator and turn off the camera's onboard IR.

    Camera positioning and lighting

I would put the camera in the spot circled below. That's the relationship between my floodlight and camera from my corridor sample I posted previously, and also for my 5442 which is featured in the thread I mentioned, where I went into details on how I dealt with the strong front lighting.

Also, here is an example of that backlight issue. The overhead floodlights defeat the camera until the shed's motion-sensing floodlight kicks in and provides some light from the camera's viewpoint. This camera was a Dahua 5231 Starlight zoomed in specifically to get details on any prowlers who...

IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night videos added)

I got another 8MP Hik installed, this one with a 6mm lens. With the longer lens and more resolution, I positioned it further back from the location of the camera it replaces, which was an aging 3.6mm 3MP FuzzyCam (not really, but...). The scene it's looking at is one of the two paths prowlers...

    Camera positioning and lighting

on 2, I would say they can be very close to each other, if that's how things have to be. For example, the camera's own onboard lights are at zero separation from the camera, and that is the most common setup by far. If your camera will be at one end of your corridor scene, I would put the...

    Camera positioning and lighting

You may want to check out my threads below where I delved into settings to counteract having a floodlight in the camera's view, as well as the overexposure from a nearby floodlight that can wipe out useful detail. Outdoor night vision cameras and rodents ASAP

In your current scene, I recommend having the IR and the camera view the scene from different locations. That way, if an object moves across the face of the house, its shadow will make it far easier to pick out, both for the camera and yourself. For that role, if you can get electricity to a...

Review - OEM IPC-B5442E-ZE 4MP AI Varifocal Bullet Camera With Starlight+

The Z4E has a longer-range lens. I've been thinking about a couple for parking-lot duty, in a crossfire arrangement (the lot is a rectangle) so they have a zoomed view of cars on the opposite half of the lot from a medium overhead angle that would catch faces on prowlers between the cars. Or I...

Outdoor night vision cameras and rodents ASAP

I suspect the white streak you see across the upper-right window is what triggered your camera. The image is only 640 x 480 pixels in size; is that the camera's actual resolution? From a camera standpoint, given the unusual scenario, varifocal is a good idea so you have flexibility in your...

IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night videos added)

Seems likely. I can live with those, they're not out of control. Also, the most likely orientation I'll pick will rule out cars coming into the scene from the side.

IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night videos added)

You're correct, no audio. It doesn't have an audio input either. Here's a quick photo of what's under the hatch (reset button and card slot) and the cables (network and optional 12V power)).

Outdoor night vision cameras and rodents ASAP

This is my suggestion: 1. Get the 2231T-ZS-S2. One of the benefits here is that it is a varifocal camera and it can focus on stuff quite close to it, if you need to put it at ground level and focus on the nearby ground or the underside of the roof. 2. put the camera down near the ground...

    Review-OEM 4mp AI Cam IPC-T5442TM-AS Starlight+

If anyone's looking to increase grip between the camera ball and the feet, grab yourself a roll of the flippety self-fusing silicone tape you can get at a hardware store or Amazon. It's got an inherently grippy nature, the proper compressibility, and is the right thickness to fit between the...
