North American 5MP "Basic Starlight" vs 2MP Starlight

You could also consider the HFW4239TN "color only" for the front. I have the 2831 for daytime ID. In my neighborhood houses are robbed during the day by people who ring doorbells to see who is not home. I would like to do overlapping cameras, but don't want to be the weird guy with too many...

VPN Synology NAS vs. Asus RT-AC1900P

So this is AT&T DSL? Because with a cable modem running VPN on a router is easy. I have also run VPN on a Synology NAS, but I too was not completely comfortable that I had all the correct firewall rules. I'm more comfortable with VPN on the router.

    Cameras and security lights

I use Homeseer too, but smartthings can be a good place to start. Or maybe start with Vera which, like HomeSeer, does not require internet access to run. Homeseer does have a sale this month. Their R-pi unit plus the blue iris plugin is ~$140.

    Best CPU for 8x 1080p @15fps

If you are not adding cameras or resolution then what is gained by a faster processor? You would not normally overclock a 24/7 server destined for a customer. You would normally be conservative in your server spec.

Please recommend IR lamp for exterior driveway and backyard

I have this one, which is well made. It's appropriate for more distant shots. It's probably in the 24 watt range. It's best for a high camera. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004F9LF7E/

Clarification of Wiki's "Choosing Hardware for Blue Iris"

SSD is beneficial in that it puts the OS and programs on a device without moving parts. But I agree that there is no reason to look for SSD in a used system. All new drives is the way to go on a used system that hopefully will be trouble free for a long time. At ~$30 for a 256gb SSD it should be...

    i7-7700 slow performance

Huh. Task manager shows BI is using the high resources? Have you tried recording to a non-BI database format and playing the video with other software?

Need help building a home security system

Thanks. I also have the 2831 on order as well as one of the Dahua "night color" cameras with the F1.0 lens. I'm going to be experimenting with landscape lighting to see if I can get night color and/or better facial recognition at night.

Need help building a home security system

This one seems to have the newest sensor: 4K IR Vari-focal ePoE Eyeball – Dahua North America

Need help building a home security system

I expect that the newer 8mp will outperform (or at least match) the starlights at night. Larger sensor, better glass, faster glass. I have the varifocal turret on order but won't see it for several weeks.

IP Cam recommendation for extremely low lux without IR

The color camera mentioned above with a dim white light source would probably work. The led white light source may need an IR cut filter added. Or possibly a blue LED light source.

    faces at night - (5231E-Z12)

Realize that a zoom, and especially a superzoom, will be less sharp and slower than a fixed lens camera. (Slower means smaller aperture so more gain and noise). Ideally you would frame the target area will a fixed lens large pixel starlight equivalent and light it with visible light.

Remote access of BI best practices?

I have no performance problems using the Blue Iris iOS app through the VPN server on my netgear Orbi router. I do not let Blue Iris have access through the firewall to the internet. At far as it knows the iPhone app is a local LAN connection. I have openVPN and the VPN server set up for UPD...

2532 glitchy playback during motion events

Nice looking video. You could try recording to SD to see if the problem persists.

    Facial features in night mode

Yep. If job one is to ID the perp, the system needs to be setup for that purpose. Plenty of homeowners have proudly given their security video to the police who are silently wondering what they are suppose to do with images of unrecognizable criminals. That may make for a better looking...

    2532 hikvision

I've purchased a 2532, but it's not installed. It's tiny. I think the 2.8mm is the perfect residential door/porch cam. Any criminal is going to know it's a camera, but few visitors would notice. The SD card features and performance should be identical to all the newer models. If I was shooting...
