Amazon drivers are using our driveway to 'break in' their new vans...

Trees usually win these battles. This tree was not that big so the tree did flinch a little. I've seen cars wrapped around trees. Sadly, most drivers will not survive a head on collision with a large tree. Better to hit brick walls because large trees won't blink.

Synology NAS NVR vs. a Standalone NVR

I have a Synology NAS but have never tried the Surveillance Station app. I've heard good things though. I agree that their software support is great and I do use some of the other apps. Just felt $50/cam didn't make sense once you start adding more and more cams. Especially when 6 of my cams...

You could try booting up your server using a LiveCD to see if it will display to your monitor.

Blue Iris in VMWare ESXi 6.7 with passthrough of Intel integrated graphics

Are you running the latest version of ESXi and did you enable passthrough via the host web gui? If you don't see the iGPU listed under "PCI Devices" (under Manage->Hardware), then your CPU may be too old. The e3-1275v2 is a 2012 processor.

Blue Iris in a VM? Yup no problem!

You could definitely replace all three with one machine, but if your reasoning is to be proactive to avoid a future failure, I wouldn't do it. A single new machine could still fail.

    ISO BI Computer

The NUCs use laptop processors, so they are relatively weak compared to desktop processors. Honestly, the only good think about NUCs is their size (which helps with power and noise too). I have two of the NUC Hades Canyon models which work fine as mini-desktops. You can do basic gaming on...

What router are you guys using?

pfSense as my router/firewall. It's free and does everything. I use it for ad blocking, DynDNS, and VPN (not for BI though). Also have a separate interface off it for my DMZ.

Ethernet Cable Max Distance - Something to Think About

I used to work for Cisco for over a decade. You can probably tell by some of my posts about configuring Cisco devices. I've always followed the best practice rule that the limit for copper based Ethernet (X-BaseT) using UTP cable is 100m. My recommendation is to stick to the 100m limit...

Remote access to BI while isolating from home network

Yes, you would have more security. You still need to apply firewall rules for your BI subnet. This gives you some flexibility to lock down your BI a little more. For example, you might have a rule that only allows TeamViewer ports to and from your home subnet. So if your BI server does get...

Would this computer on sale at Costco make a good Blue Iris box?

How many cameras do you plan to have? With sub-streams, there are lots of options out there that would work. The HP Pavilion TP01-1127c does not look that great for $600. it has one 4GB and one 8GB DIMM. You want two of the same type (same speed and size). one NIC, which is okay. You can...

Remote access to BI while isolating from home network

    3) yes if you want to apply firewall rules only for your BI machine and not the rest of your home subnet. This gives you some flexibility to lock down your BI a little more. For example, you might have a rule that only allows RDP to and from your home subnet. So if your BI server does get...

Good place to get fiber optic cable?

not sure what gauge your low voltage lines will be, but typical 12 or 14 AWG won't work very well over 200ft for DC low voltage. Your lights will get dim. Place your transformer closer to where your lights will be. Instead of pulling the low voltage line, pull another 8/2 or 6/2 for an...

    IP Dynamic Address

If this is for remote BI App access, another option is stunnel. You don't need DynDNS if you use the stunnel method. Your BI machine will advertise your external IP address to the BI cloud servers (which manage your license). When you connect via the Blue Iris app, and you lookup your license...

    New Networking Rack...

I think you will be fine in terms of weight. I was concerned if you added a couple of UPS's which are 30lbs+ each. That plus a 100lbs+ rack is a lot of weight - especially as devices are mounted at the front of the rack. Looking forward to the final pics!

@saltwater: Are these residential 2x4 studs (measures 1.5" x 3.5" cross-section)? They might be different sizes in Australia. When loaded, how much weight are you expecting? 18RU of equipment gets really heavy when you start adding things like UPS's.

    IP Dynamic Address

If bridge mode on your ISP router is not an option, there are other options to achieve dynamic DNS. Do a search. For example, I use freedns.afraid.org. There may be other options for you in Slovenia.

    VPN Primer for Noobs

For mine, the OTN was already connected to the ActionTec via Ethernet. I guess the VZ installations vary depending on your location. This was about 4 years ago when I switched from Comcast to VZ. I just moved the OTN connection from the ActionTec to my WAN vlan and moved my ActionTec to DMZ vlan.

    VLAN design example

    1) If you don't want your camera to access the anything beyond its vlan....when you set static IP addresses for your cameras, do not set a gateway. Your cameras will not know how to go beyond the subnet. Also, you don't need DHCP for the camera network. Set a static IP address for your BI PC...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

Your WAN gateway (in your case Actiontec) is only allowing TCP 1194 to your Asus. I think you are okay. If there was no Actiontec in the path, and the Asus was your WAN gateway, a scan would still show TCP 1194 as being open. Ideally, if your WAN gateway had stateful firewall functionality...

If cost is not a factor, you easily do this with an SDWAN solution like VeloCloud. You would install a VCE at your home and connect both WAN connections to it. On your laptop, you would run a virtual VCE as the other endpoint. Velocloud allows you to connect multiple sites together...

Noob Question on Router & Switch

It's a TLS tunnel (not SSL, but some people use that term synonymously) and yes it's just as secure because it is a VPN which uses the same crypto. Blue Iris is an app, so IMHO securing it to the app makes more sense than building a tunnel to your entire home network just for Blue Iris. If you...
