Noob Question on Router & Switch

Port forwarding is generally a big no no if you forward to an unsecure service. When you port forward, you basically open a port on your router and send that traffic to another device. If you enable OpenVPN on your router, in essence you are "opening" that port. Typically people use TCP...

Wireless woes... Looking for constructive discussion.

If you can get line-of-sight between your camera and AP, and you swap out the antennas on the camera and AP with directional antennas, you should get a decent, consistent signal with not too much interference. It may not look pretty though. And you would have to get your AP outdoors (or at...

Noob Question on Router & Switch

If you want to to connect remotely without a VPN, you could try stunnel. Sorry, stunnel can be considered a type of VPN, so technically you are still using a VPN. Stunnel is going to build a TLS tunnel directly from your phone to Blue Iris. You use TLS tunnels each time you access your bank...

Raspberry Pi Users Unite: What are you using your Raspberry Pi Devices For?

Here is a good instructable for setting up your Pi as an 433MHz RF transmitter. https://www.instructables.com/id/Super-Simple-Raspberry-Pi-433MHz-Home-Automation/ I didn't use this exact procedure (I've had mine for 4-5 years - that's why it's still on a 2B and I never upgraded it), but it...

Raspberry Pi Users Unite: What are you using your Raspberry Pi Devices For?

ESP8266 are great. I used these to make my own smart garage door opener (original version). I have since changed my smart garage door opener to a customized SONOFF running tasmota. If you want to get dirty with the ESP8266, I recommend the ESP8266-01. They are cheap. If anyone wants my...

Raspberry Pi Users Unite: What are you using your Raspberry Pi Devices For?

I have one pi zero, two Pi 2B, four pi 3b, and two pi 4B (4GB). The 4B's are running OpenElec. I have one 2B as my OpenHAB server. The only reason I use the Pi for this instead of a linux VM is because the Pi has GPIOs. I connect a radio transmitter to it and control my RF switches. This...

Low cost IP-Cam with access over Internet

I think mat200 is referring to this one. https://amcrest.com/prohd-5mp-outdoor-security-ip-turret-poe-camera-2-8mm-lens-103-fov-ip67-weatherproof-white-ip5m-t1179ew-28mm.html It's not a bullet, but it should meet all your requirements including SD slot. By it from Amazon for $60+tax. It...

    CPU's ???

If you are going to run bare metal, and you have 17% GPU with 5 cams, you should be fine with 11 cams. Especially once you enable sub-streams and direct to disk. Having SSDs might help your recording if you are running max resolution and max FPS on all cams.

    CPU's ???

You have to enable record direct to disk. no overlays. sub streams. Try it without a GPU to see if it's okay. Test the setting that you would be using as oppose to trying to stress test your hardware.

    CPU's ???

Having run dinosaurs for years, I recently retired them (gave away one) and the other one I power on for testing when needed. The dual Xeons with lots of memory are nice when you have lots of VMs. I like my dinosaur too, but it eats a lot and I was tire of feeding him and I don't have solar...

If you are doing D1 sub streams with 11 cameras, your MP/s drops to under 100 (assuming 15fps).

BI app needs to port forward?

OpenVPN uses the OpenSSL library for encryption. Another option is to use stunnel, which also uses the OpenSSL library. Stunnel creates a TLS wrapper around your session to BI. So without any additional monetary investment, you can setup stunnel. Instead of opening a port for OpenVPN, you...

    VLAN design example

Right, an enterprise switch like what Slugger got would have no problem doing inter-VLAN routing. If one decides to create two VLANs and hairpin the traffic through a home router, the router may have a hard time keeping up - not sure. I'm sure it depends on the router model. Personally, I...

    Tired of Getting Broken Into

If you want the Amcrest T1179EW, they are $10 off right now on Amazon with the code: WUXJKDET I have four of them and just ordered a fifth 5min ago so I know the code still works. I have a couple HDW5442TM's and the T1179EW's performance is quite surprising for $50.
