Hi Andy, I'm interested in the Dahua 5542T-ZE 4mp varifocal turret. If I understand correctly, the ones you sell on your Amazon and Aliexpress stores are the same Dahua cameras but rebranded, correct? Cheers, M

    Dahua recommendation / newest models?

That's good to know! Thank you. Most likely it will be my only option.

    Dahua recommendation / newest models?

I see, good to know! They say they are an authorized distributor.

    Dahua recommendation / newest models?

Yeah, the two stores I am looking at purchasing from say they are genuine models. However, they do not have the 5442T-ZE. Maybe I'll ask them if they can source it, and if not, shipping from abroad will be my only option.

    Dahua recommendation / newest models?

Cheers, I have been working through that page. Oh, the HDW5442T-ZE looks great and isn't too far out of my budget. I'm going to have a look around and see if I can get this one in Australia. I'll check his stores out, but I am nervous purchasing overseas as any warranty issues are a headache...

    Dahua recommendation / newest models?

Hi, I have a couple of questions. First question: What are the newest models of Dahua turret cameras? I am somewhat confused by the naming system. There's 2xxx, 3xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx, etc. I initially thought the higher number was the newer series but now I am not so sure. Second question: I'm...

    Good router for security?

Cheers for the advice! Yeah, I did notice that they sold devices with PFSense pre-installed but it was a little pricier than I was wanting. To be honest, I'd probably go the DIY route with it just to better learn about networking stuff.

    Good router for security?

Thanks! Yes, I'm looking forward to setting it all up. I think it's nice to understand how it all works... and to have control over it. Definitely will upgrade my gear in the future... better router, switches, or maybe PFSense. Thanks again for all the help everyone :-)

    Good router for security?

Thanks everyone for your comments/help! I ended up going with the Edge Router X, 2x Netgear GS305E switches and a Ubiquity WiFi6 AC Lite WAP. Probs won't get to me until next week, but going to set it all up then! Then my network is ready for the cams.

    Good router for security?

Thanks! The reason I like the EdgeRouter is because there is a guide here + config file to set it all up. That'll make it quite easy for me to get it going. Unfortunately after shipping to Australia that HP T620 works out at $410 AUD, which is a bit more than I was wanting to spend. Also the...

    Good router for security?

Thanks guys for all your help! I think I've decided on a good solution. EdgeRouter X (5-port) WAN (ETH0) -> Modem ETH1 -> Netgear Managed Switch 1 -> Home devices (ETH) -> TP-Link WAP -> Home...

    Good router for security?

Thanks a lot for your help - I am learning! I do like the idea of the VLANs in a separate managed switch. But how does the managed switch handle devices connected by WiFi? I.E., in my head, it seems like WiFi devices would go straight to the WAP, into the PFSenseBox (or Router) and then be...

    Good router for security?

Yeah, I was thinking of using it solely as a WAP. Oh, so if I did Modem > PFSense Box > WAP. Is this enough equipment to setup two VLANs -- one for home stuff and one for cameras? Or, do I still need to incorporate a switch (managed, unmanaged?) somewhere in that chain?
  15. M

    Good router for security?

That looks interesting! If I understand correctly, that is solely a router (and a switch?). It is not a wireless access point? So the order would look like this: Modem -> ISP Router (as the WAP) -> Edge Router X. Can I assign wireless devices to a VLAN as well or can I only assign devices...

Blue Iris system recommendation? AMD vs Intel?

Oh, right. That makes sense! Thank you! Oh good to know. Integrated graphics is cheaper! Cheers, I'll look at an Intel for the Quick Sync stuff.

Blue Iris system recommendation? AMD vs Intel?

Hi, I see most recommendations for Intel. Why is this? I'm thinking of an AMD 3600 6-core 12-thread w/ 8GB of RAM for 8x4MP cameras @ 30 FPS = 960Mbps. Is a GPU needed? Would that be suitable? Cheers

    questions about NVR terminology

Yeah, I was 100/5 until I switched to NBN recently. If you've got HFC, hopefully you'll be able to get a nice 100/20 or 250/25 plan. The upload is so much better. Single-story, thankfully so that might simplify things a little bit. Thanks for the info! Ohhh right, makes sense! Thank you.

    Good router for security?

Interesting... so essentially all your home devices connect to the router as usual via WiFi or ethernet, but then just plug in the stuff you want to isolate on the switch? Or does the router act just as a WAP and then the switch manages what goes where for both ethernet and wireless devices?

    Good router for security?

Great! It's a big learning curve but very interesting stuff! So glad I found this forum. I see. Yeah, I think the guest network is probably the easiest option but I do want to learn how to setup VLANs. If the router doesn't support VLANs, can you buy a managed switch that does, connect that to...

    Good router for security?

Thanks again to everyone for the wealth of information, it is much appreciated! I'm going through that post, very helpful! So, essentially the OpenVPN allows an encrypted tunnel from other devices (say phone) to the router (i.e., home network)? By setting it up, I can essentially pretend to...

    Good router for security?

Right, so I should set it up only for the cameras and leave the other devices on the network out of it? Is the idea to setup a VLAN with OpenVPN on that, and then connect the devices to that VLAN that you want to use OpenVPN with? ---------- I like the look of that ASUS RT-AC86U. Does it...

    Good router for security?

So, is PFSense basically turning a small computer into a router? Or do you still have a router as well? Do you guys run everything on the network through OpenVPN, or just insecure stuff like cams or IoT devices?

    questions about NVR terminology

I see I see, interesting thanks! I don't think I have any ethernet cables in the wall -- there is a coaxial port which the modem screws into, and then the router connects to the modem via ethernet which may or may not be Cat 6. Well that's good to know. I don't think there is any existing...

    questions about NVR terminology

I'd be getting something that supports H.265+ as it has the best compression afaik. I have 250/25. The best internet in Australia unless you're one of the lucky few that can get 1000/50. Are you talking about my local network, from the cams to the NVR/PC, or the internet? My network does...

    Good router for security?

What is this rabbit hole that I have delved into? :lmao::lmao: I foresee a big learning curve ahead! First of all, thank you all for your responses! Oh, I see. Interesting! I have used Wireguard in the PIA VPN but did not know it can be set up on its own. Ahhh roger, that makes sense. I'm...

I see I see. Is it not possible to use another VPN or is OpenVPN specifically needed? I see I see. Thanks.

    Good router for security?

Hi, I'm interested in a home security system. I've been reading the IPCam cliff notes and it discusses a bit of network/vpn/router/cam security. I'm currently using a modem-router provided by my ISP. I assume it is probably not the most secure. Are there any recommendations for well respected...

    questions about NVR terminology

    1. Oh cool, thanks! 2. I wondered that - but I thought perhaps that 320 limit was based on a less efficient codec (H.264 or the other) where the bandwidth is actually quite big. Bandwidth is just the bitrate right? If the camera's bitrate is 10Mbps then it uses 10Mbps of bandwidth? Or is there...

    questions about NVR terminology

Hi all, When looking at various NVRs (Dahua, Uniview, VIP Vision, Hik) I see some terminology that I don't quite understand and was hoping I may be able to get some clarification on. (Did a lot of Googling but couldn't find the answers myself.) This is an example of an NVR I'm looking at...
