    Camera Dropping Issue

I'm in rainy Seattle. Very different than dry Phoenix. So Looney2ns may be on the right track, w/ his CCA hunch. Good advice from Looney2ns, as usual. I'm DIY, so no guidance for finding someone. If adding 2-3 cams, and replacing the cable run to your gate cam, you may need two contractors...

    Camera Dropping Issue

timelinex, Welcome to the forum! Couplers are for temporary use, not permanent. Couplers indicate a lack of professionalism and a hokey install. I know "temporary" can turn into "permanent". Been there. I used a coupler to "temporarily" connect a cam on my test rig in the winter. I moved the...

    Cat6 or Cat5

Cameraguy: Cat 6: - stiffer, a consideration if you're pulling through a long or multi-turn conduit run. - a tad trickier for crimping on an RJ45 - a wee bit more expensive - 1Gb bandwidth cat 6 is overkill for ip cams Cat 5e: - flexible, crimping is a bit easier, etc. - but the minor...

    CAT5e Riser or Plenum ?

Welcome to the forum! Plenum is more expensive, since the plenum environment is tougher. (high flammability rating). If the cabling is in the cavity created by studs, sheetrock, and exterior sheeting (the "riser"), you can use riser rated. 22 or 23 AWG is better for poe cameras because of the...

    Varifocal Lens Change

This thread is for changing a lens, not changing a sensor. True, a 5Mp sensor won't be as good in low light as a 2Mp sensor. Swapping the lens won't change the sensor. (unless I'm missing something) True dat, especially since the Ir illumination pattern is wider to see things with the wider...

    duhua or Nest cameras?

Paul1983, Welcome to the forum. Great advice above, esp the ipcamtalk wiki. My 2 cents: Alarm first. That's Security. Surveillance cams tell you what happened, after the fact, for the most part. Consider getting a dog. The police will tell you that dogs are an excellent deterrent. Nest cams...

I have high ceilings at my business. I need some pole recommendations?

Why not mount the cams at 20ft? Pick cams with a narrower FOV, ie: maybe a 12mm lens. Play around with the "Camera Calculator" It will show image clarity at 20ft, using different lens sizes and the FOV. I assume you don't already have the cameras.... If you have the cams, then consider a lens...

Solution for fixing IR filter stuck?

I had a stuck filter. Fixed it. It's still working, 2.5 years later. Details here: Problem with DS-2CD2635F-IS/ZJ RED image This thread has lots of details and pics re: disassembly: Dahua 4MP 25mm LPR Modification Good luck! Fastb

Barn owl (but DOF problem between IR/no IR mode)

when the camera switches to IR mode, the IR cut filter moves out of the optical path. A click can be heard in the camera. So the optical path is different, from "Day" to "Night" mode. The different optical path affects focus. These threads will provide more info: Any Dahua cams WITHOUT the...

Unusual Pet Being Walked By The House

She is a unicorn. The horn is simply hidden/blocked by the guy wearing the "Kerry County Hunt Club jacket" . Look closely, the pic does show the base of the unicorn's horn. This unicorn I spotted in Ireland. With decades-long-standing local tales of fairies, leprechauns, and religious...

Do you think Audio is "worth it"?

Audio: My cams don't have built-in audio. They have an "audio in" jack. 1) I heard built-in audio wasn't very good 2) I bought cams with audio capability, and then bought the mics that served my purpose (form factor, sensitivity, powere POE splitter, etc) Mounting a cam, with poe splitter to...

Do you think Audio is "worth it"?

All, In WA state, two party consent is needed. Meaning i had to place a sign at the bottom of my long driveway that stated "Video & Audio recording is underway on my property". If they proceed up the driveway, that's consent. 1) The mic on the parking area cam is semi-useful. 2) The mic on the...

    Why Buy Dahua?

Sure, old technology is always cheaper than the new and better stuff. The "Closeout" sales are called that for a reason. If you're focused on a low cost solution, like a closeout kit, stay away from siamese cabling. (analog cams). Wiring is often the most expensive part of installing a cam...

    Why Buy Dahua?

Spot on advice! Maybe you believe Motion Detect will work as "advertised". But after the time spent installing, configuring, and living with MD, you'll discover that MD sucks for outdoors. As many here, including myself, can attest. After all that time, the Costco return policy may have...

    Strange Stop on the Corner

Or is yelling "Voyeur" at your cam? His truck has an automatic transimission, and the truck rolls back & forth when he thows it into Park. "Park" is not to be trusted on a hill. Setting the parking brake is recommended. That also greatly reduces wear & tear on the pawl for "Park" With that...

    Hidden SpyCam Install Suggestions

Using shims to mount the J-box might be considered? ie: angle the box, not the cam. Re: cam captures too much of the non-threatening wall, a different lens could help. But you may not have that option. But maybe, move the J-Box closer to the area you want to monitor? Good luck!

Labor Cost to do Cat run and mounting camera in Northern California ?

JSIGMO, Thanks for the link to that article. It was a thoughtful article, and I agree with the premise that childhood has changed. Kid independence is reduced, (like roaming the neighborhood, unsupervised, with friends). Kids exposure to risk and danger is reduced, which the article points...

    Speaker and Mic for camera

try looking at motorcycle speakers. - Amplified. - 12V DC powered, so you could use a poe splitter (12V version) or a 48V poe splitter to power you cam, then a 3 terminal voltage regulator to step down from 48V to 12V to power the amp. - Motorcycle speakers are meant to be used outdoors, so...

    Just Sharing My Progress

Something to consider: putting cables in a plenum. If by "plenum" you mean "duct", that's generally not permitted by code. And non-plenum rated cables would be a definite no-no. plenum rated cat cable is much more expensive than regular cable. Just something to think about....
