    Difference between Hikvision 76xx and 78xx series

    The different models either use a built in power supply or an external adapter. Either way both use an IEC standard cord and automatically adapt to 120V/60Hz. Update: the DS-7816N-E1 that I just received came with a wall wart with USA prongs and an adapter for 220V.

    "And getting round the u-boot bootloader captive restricted shell." What do you mean by this? If you are in a u-boot terminal session can you not read flash, erase, and write flash? u-boot can protect sectors but you can disable that protection with the "protect off all" command.

    You should be able to select auto start live view. If you don't have this option you may need a FW upgrade as I think this option was only lately added.

    I believe that the underlying hardware is the same between the 8- and 16-channel NVRs. The only restriction is the firmware on the 8-channel that restricts it to 8 cameras. Had anyone figured out how to mod the 8-channel to be a 16-channel?

    I'm curious as to why you need the 2nd Ethernet connection. Why not use the NVR's Virtual Host feature to access the IPCs? (Network Settings...Advanced...Enable Virtual Host) This allows you to access each camera connected to the NVR with no special cabling.

    Look at these MagLev fans: http://www.sunon.com/tw/products/pdf/maglev.pdf The manufacturer makes noise and reliability their main concern. I haven't tried one yet but they seem to at least address the noise issue. Also, these NVR's are rated to operate at ambient temps up to 55C (130F)...

    Without the NVR you would use your PC which means all traffic goes to your main router then to the PC running Blue Iris or whatever. This will use bandwidth to your PC and compete with traffic to your PC such as VoIP or watching Netflix on your PC. I guess I should have been more specific.
