    VPN Primer for Noobs

I don't think I had to change any firewall rules on my Asus to get this working. When I open a connection from my iPhone, I see my ASUS DDNS address in the format "MyDDNSName.asuscomm.com" under server, and some random IP address for the server IP. Did you setup Asus DDNS? Did you look at the...

Tell us about your home automation!

I've been playing with a wemos esp card running ESP Easy. Its a relatively cheap and easy way to add functionality to Domoticz. My first project is a garage door opener/sensor. I'll start a thread as soon as I'm sure it's working reliably.

Building surveillance system, asking for camera/BI recommendations.

Not sure what you are basing this on? Most people here would recommend the Dahua starlight turret, although it is more than $100 per, more like $150-160 per camera. model is IPC-HDW5231R-Z

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Great advice Based on the diagram, I think you may find you want cameras closer to the doors. Main entry points, and you want as close to a straight on front shot as possible for facial recognition.

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

No I.E. is giving me an issue viewing the video. Have to work that out before I can. I have used safari and chrome with NACL web plug in to view cam video.

    Dahua mounting, one like this?

With a dahau starlight turret, you loosen one screw, and then it can rotate around. There are some limitations to its movement though, really need to get one and try it.

    Camera placement

Are you recording the ring video? One reason I won't get a ring is that I can't record to my Blue Iris setup, I would need to use their cloud recording. Also, I'm not sure how useful the 2nd camera position would be, might just get the backs of peoples heads. I guess you would get them as they...

    Dahua mounting, one like this?

The Dahua turret and bullet I have can rotate/pan/tilt with mounting provisions. The Bosch mount shown looks fancy, but seems a bit of overkill to position a camera.

    Overwhelmed with options, need advice

So I have to admit having mostly bullets. Main reason is I have heard is spiders, bullets are supposed to be more prone to spiders and their webs. IR attracts them. If I had it to do over, I would get turrets, although so far I haven't had spider issues, I only installed the system this winter...

    New guy, new project

I record with BI 24/7. Lots here do, so I really don't think that's a factor. To me, it comes down to flexibility (BI) versus easier to setup (NVR). There are plenty here in both camps, I expect either would meet your needs.

    Overwhelmed with options, need advice

For a first camera, I recommend getting a varifocal so you can see how things really look at different zooms. Costs a little more, but gives you flexibility. I bought a PFA137 round junction box to mount the 5231R-Z to. But it depends how you are going to mount it. If you mount this to a wall...

    Overwhelmed with options, need advice

The Dahua IPC-HDW5231R-Z is the current "standard" recommendation here these days. Not cheap, but not real expensive either. Does a great job at low light, which is when bad things happen. My recommendation is to buy one, mount it on a 2x4 and figure out how to get it working so you can see...

New guy, new house and new system...

Personal preference to some degree. I run BI and am happy, I think its more flexible. NVR is probably more plug and play and easier to implement. I have a PC with a small SSD for the OS and other programs, a 4tb purple for recording, running BI and recording 24/7. As looney already pointed...

Is this quote good? From security camera company...

Get a PFA137. I had to buy a few M4 screws too, but it fits perfectly. Also, you really should get the cameras, get them working (you will need a NVR or a POE injector) mount them on a 2x4 or similar, and put them where you are considering installing them. See how it looks during the day, and...

A turret is different from a dome. Dome has a plastic dome covering the camera lens, follow specs link in first post. Randy

Is this quote good? From security camera company...

I don't have a NVR, I have a PC, so not an expert here. Most recommend a 16 channel NVR for room to grow, and it's only a little more money http://www1.dahuasecurity.com/products/nvr42164232-16p-4ks2-8301.html or US version DHI-NVR42A16-16P

Everything you could wish to know about it lol Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z) BTW, problem with domes is the plastic dome can get messed up over time with exposure to sun. Also you can get glare off the dome. I have one of the starlight turrets, although it is not installed...

Is this quote good? From security camera company...

I would let him run the cables for $250, and go buy your own stuff. For less money, you can buy dahua starlight turrets, about $160 each on aliexpress. Better cam for less money. For NVR, either a dahua or PC with Blue Iris.

    Homemade starlight camera

I disagree, at least in my application. I almost never watch my camera feeds real time. If this is for personal use, I think most peopled are not watching feeds. For me, the entire point of the system is to see who the bad guy was, if something does happen. But, if this is for commercial use...

    Front door cam - 6mm?

I would expect a flashing light to mess up the camera exposure as it has to adjust from bright to dim. As for scaring off, I guess it depends on the bad guy lol.

    Front door cam - 6mm?

I wouldn't assume they are idiots, not with the proliferation of security cams. I've seen videos here with guys either in hats or hoody's, and I bet that's at least partially because of cams. Many of my neighbors are getting cams, and almost all of them have the cams too high for facial...

DS-2CD2032 vs IPC-HFW4431R-Z (night without IR)

DS-2CD2032 vs IPC-HFW4431R-Z (night without IR)

A dahau starlight will work better at night if you can stretch you budget for a IPC-HDW5231R-Z

dahua starlight cams - attract bugs with ir light?

Also, if its too close to an overhang, you'll get IR reflections off of the overhang. Messes up exposure at night. As suggested, try one out. I would buy one, get it working and mount it to a 2x4. See how it looks during the day, and at night, in the locations you are considering. Once you...

Our opener has IR transmitter on one side, receiver on the other. Won't close if anything blocks the path. I thought this was on all openers for a long time. I just had to replace mine because the old one was acting up.

Next best thing under 100$ to Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

How about going a little over budget, you could get a IPC-HFW4231S or IPC-HFW4231M. Around $120 per. But I'd recommend buying one IPC-HDW5231R-Z, and trying it out. See how it looks during the day, and at night. Mount on a 2x4 and you can locate it where you planning to put your cameras.

Next best thing under 100$ to Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

The thing with the IPC-HDW4431C-A is they only seem to come in 2.8 or 3.6 mm, so it depends if you can live with that. Really only good for up close images. I have a 4431r-z, and my problem with that is if you have it zoomed out, images up close at night get washed out. The IR on it can be...
