    Is a NAS an overkill?

I wouldn't bother with NAS on a remotely accessed system. Most consumer grade NAS have crap speed even on a Gbit connection. I'd go with nayr's suggestion, and drop a WD purple in it.

    Router advice?

On my router I can set static DHCP addresses. I do it for all the known items on my network. That way if something unknown pops up I can check it out. I use 3rd party Tomato firmware, so I don't know if I'd call it "easy". DD-WRT is another 3rd part firmware that also has static DHCP. You...

Best way to save video for police --LaView (Hikvision)

Thanks, DSFilters does allow VLC to play the saved files. It's still kinda of buggy, but I figure it's the way the stream was saved from the cameras. It freezes sometimes, and won't play past some points. The tools doesn't seem to have a regular player, just one called "Local Playback"...

New home POE camera setup - Feedback requested

I recently got a LaView 1080p system, with NVR and 4 cameras. So I'm still in the learning stages of what I want/need. The NVR has a built in PoE switch, so that part is easy. All of the cameras are 4mm, and the 2 I have crossing the front overlap too much. The picture looks great, but the...

New home POE camera setup - Feedback requested

I'm no camera expert by any means, I'm more of a networking expert. So on the network side, a switch and hub are different, you can't really get hubs anymore. A switch should direct the traffic only to the port it needs to go to. So on a 16 port 100 Mbit switch you should be able to have 8...

    strange cat5 wire connection

Ditto what Kawboy12R and t84a said. Ethernet is picky in the best of cases. I have a Fluke meter that certifies Ethernet, and a 90 meter run just barely passes with everything done correctly with high quality cable. I've seen 10 meter cables that were wired "correctly" not work due to...

Best way to save video for police --LaView (Hikvision)

I have a LaView LV-KN988P84A4 system. It's re-branded Hikvision 1080p POE NVR and cameras. So the system seems to have the same features as the Hikvision NVRs, and I'm guessing it saves files the same way. I know how to save video from the NVR both from the console and with the client. But...

    Thieves from last night

I got this same system the OP has from Newegg last Black Friday. While I'm well read on camera systems, it's the first NVR system I've had. I'm still trying to figure out the capabilities and limits. Putting it through it's paces is the best way to learn. I have figured out the 4mm, 78 deg...

    strange cat5 wire connection

100 Mbit signal is going to be pickier in wire quality that 10 Mbit. Just keeping a link with a poor cable will be harder on a 100 Mbit link. The length of the run will also matter if you do non-standard things. You should only use twisted pairs for the network. If you use random wires, you...

    strange cat5 wire connection

I'm not 100% clear on everything you asked. I don't know what you mean by "CC Current", or "not same couple". 10 and 100 Mbit network cable needs 4 wires, or more accurately, 2 twisted pairs. Cat5 (and Cat5e) has 4 pairs (8 wires). But you only need 2 pairs for 10 and 100 Mbit. The twisted...

RasPipC - Cameras on your TV made Easy.

I just got a Raspberry Pi 3. I'm amazed what you can get for $35. I'm looking forward to see what I can do with it. Bradley

How do I determine the appropriate zoom needed?

You want a FoV calculator. You plug in the mm of the lens, and size of the ccd/cmos and the distance to the target, and it tells you the width of the frame. 10x isn't the number you're looking for, it just means the lens can zoom 10x the minimum lens size. That means if the minimum is 2.8mm...
