    Smallest/most discrete outdoor security camera?

Rob, do you get much infrared glare the way those are up in there? Or do you use external illumination?

    Smallest/most discrete outdoor security camera?

Another vote for a 5442 varifocal here as well. It’s a fantastic camera that performs great day and night. I got one of the new color4K-X and love it as well, but it’s big and very noticeable. It’s crazy good too tho. Another downside to it tho is the wider view. It’s harder to identify...

    Image sensor size - 1/1.8” vs 1/2.8"

I have a HDW5231R-ZE which is a 2MP with a 1/2.8” sensor size. I also have a HDW5442R-ZE which is a 4MP with a 1/1.8” sensor. The 5442 is a newer model but both day and night look better than the 5231. 1/1.8=.5555” 1/2.8=3571” Not quite double in size.

Is HiKvision's camera better than Dahua's?

I prefer dahua, but hikvision isn’t a bad brand either. There are many newer cameras that are great. You can also get models that are a few years old now that are really impressive and a little cheaper. A lot here buy cams from Andy. Here’s a couple reviews of some really good cams...

    IPC-Color4K-X 4K/8MP 1/1.2” CMOS sensor (N85EFN2) problem

I never download any software or scan any QR code. I simply go to 192.168.1.108 and set them up from there. If you buy a hikvision cam they are usually at 192.168.1.64 I do understand how this can be confusing for someone who hasn’t done it before tho. With that said, your next camera can be...

    IPC-T5442TM-AS 2.8mm

I think a varifocal would be your best bet. IPC-T5442T-ZE would be the one I would recommend, but their have been a lot of great cameras come out lately. That would allow you to dial in and eliminate 50% of your image being wall. If better day image is what you want, 8MP will look better...

    IPC-T5442TM-AS 2.8mm

Try changing your bitrate type from VBR to CBR. Also I’m not sure what your biggest disappointment is. The image quality looked okay, but you are using a super wide field of view camera and if your hoping to read license plates or something at that distance, it won’t happen. Placement also...

PTZ illuminator and soft focus issues

Have you tried using the web hook commands? I just got a 49225 a week ago and I’m successfully adjusting presets using this API. I haven’t tried focus tho.

New Home Wiring: Cat6 or Cat5 premade cables

That’s correct. A normal RJ45 crisper will crimp a pass through connector. You have to take a razor knife afterwards to trim the ends. Cat 5 and cat 6 can all be crimped on the same tool. I don’t prefer pass through, but for someone who doesn’t do hundreds or thousands, it’s likely the...

    IPC-Color4K-X 4K/8MP 1/1.2” CMOS sensor (N85EFN2) problem

Fire up a web browser and go to 192.168.1.108 it will ask you to change the password and the region and you can set one up. It will reboot to the login screen . Log in then change the ip under the settings…network…tab. plug in the other camera and repeat. It’s important not to have them...

I have some pretty lengthy automations and yaml still isn’t very involved with mine either. I still rely pretty heavily on node red. I’m sure everything I’m doing could be done directly in home assistant, but node red is easier to me and when changing automations it’s easier to see what it’s...

POE Trigger/Switch for Mailbox Cameras on BI?

I know you went a different route, but for anyone else that encounters this issue, what I would do is wire a contact sensor at the mailbox to one pair of a cat 6. Then you can put the Shelly at the other end (in your house) of the cat 6 cable where you get good WiFi. No reason it has to be at...

You don’t have to dabble with a pi. Home assistant will run in virtual box on the same pc you run blue iris if you want to give it a go. I run mine on a home assistant blue now, but I used to run it in virtual box.

Home assistant is outstanding, but it has a steep learning curve too. They have come along way in the last year to simplify things for new users. In my experience, you can get pretty much anything in home assistant. Some things are more complicated and some are simply to add. Pair it with node...

    Image quality problems on T5442AS

I would rotate the camera 90 degrees and that would likely give you more of what you want to capture and less wall.

I too am down the home automation rabbit hole. One of the coolest things I’ve done lately is installing Frigate for my cameras. If you haven’t tried it, definitely check it out. It’s free to install and object detection is great. +1 on home assistant. It has a bit of a learning curve, but...

    T5442T-ZE Day/Night settings

I’m pretty big into home automation. For houses without neutrals at the switches, look at using Shelly 1pm for lights or Shelly 2 pm for fan light combos. You install these little relays at the fixture and leave the switches as is. You can then control them through voice assistants like alexa or...

Conduit installation help.. EMT to PVC

Conduit makes everything easier. If the cable ever goes bad, it can be pulled out and a new one can be pulled in. Especially if it's a short run, I would probably go that route.

Conduit installation help.. EMT to PVC

Schedule 40 is fine to use above ground. Schedule 80 has a slightly thicker wall that will better protect it from physical damage. The only downside to using pvc for the whole run is you gotta put extra straps on it. The sun will make it expand and contract and it will get wavy. But the downside...

Conduit installation help.. EMT to PVC

You would need to get a female adapter for the pvc and a standard connector for the emt. Are you running up the wall into soffit or what's your plan? I would probably just use pvc for all of it if that's indeed the case.
