I Would see the value in it if you had a $3/mo M2M plan that gives you 1MB of data, like Particle Electron.

Using IP Camera System as Sports Broadcasting Units

Interesting use case, but it has challenges. Fast action sports are captured at 60 fps (actually 59.97) and these cameras usually peak at 30fps. Fixed focal length lenses for these cameras are 2.8mm/4mm/6mm so your choices are really wide angle or wide angle. If you use a PTZ, then you can...

    Imx322 sensor size

Those numbers are not exact, a throwback to the size of the tube the sensor would fit in. Back then, sensors were mostly 4:3 and now we mostly have 16:9. Plus sensors usually have an active array of sensors that is a subset of the total array of pixels. The number is only useful when looking...

    Variable focal vs zoom

Generally there are 2 types of zoom lenses. Parfocal - lens says in focus while zooming in & out Varifocal - lens needs to be refocused while zooming in & out. Parfocal is way more expensive. The 2 ways to achieve a parfocal that I know of. 1. Mechanically using cams inside the lens barrel...

    4mp sensor size?

Yea, the 3MP and 4MP are 1/3". The 4MP is physically bigger than the 3MP. They both use 2.2 micron pixels. The 3MP uses a 3.5MP sensor, but you can't get all the pixels on an output. All outputs discard pixels (either 2048x1536 or 2304x1296 scaled to HD -> 1080 or 720) The 4MP gives you...

    Is encoding type chip specific?

Encoding is usually done in the firmware. If it was done in hardware, you would still have to change the firmware to match the interface of the hardware. You hoping to desolder a chip, stuff it with a new one and gain a different encoder? Yea, I'm not saying its impossible, but this is not...

    1. Checkout https://diysecurityguy.wordpress.com/2016/04/03/tip-how-to-tell-if-my-hikvision-camera-is-us-chinese-or-international/ 2. If you use an NVR, the advantage is having POE ports for each camera. So you should home-run each camera to the NVR and avoid the intermediate POE switch. (cost...

Security camera set up required after home burglery attempt

With HD, the video is the same resolution (usually 1920 x 1080), but the refresh freq is different. NTSC is 60 hz (actually 59.94hz) and PAL is 50hz. These are broadcast standards and don't matter unless you are going to directly display them on a TV or Monitor that has limited frequency...

New Member - Got my Cameras and now onto Home Security~!

The EVL3/4 works fine, but it's lacking in security. DON'T expose it to the internet with port forwarding, they are easily hackable. Take a look at the IPDatatel CBAT, similar capabilities, more secure, slightly more expensive, requires monthly monitoring, but has Ethernet monitoring with...

    Hikvision DS-2CD2342WD-I 2.8mm or 4mm Lens?

As a point of reference, the Hikvision 4MP has the same pixel pitch as the 3MP. Which is 2.2µm. So for any focal length, the 4MP will give you a slightly wider field of view. How wide you ask? For 2.8mm 3MP HFOV = 84.3° (2304 x 1296 pixels) Downscaled to output an image that is 1920 x 1080)...

SimpliSafe & Blue Iris (A Match made in Heaven)

I agree. The more I think about it, the more I dislike proprietary systems. Especially ones that become crippled if the manufacturer decides to stop offering service. Look at Revolv, google decided to shut it down and folks had a lifetime of free service. Stick with open systems or ones that...

SimpliSafe & Blue Iris (A Match made in Heaven)

Good points. Simplisafe's 2 day battery life on power outage is really nice feature. A cheap UPS could easily add to that. Certainly, I understand all my attack surfaces here. No wires here to snip without me knowing about it. Can't say the same thing for some dude in a vehicle parked down the...

SimpliSafe & Blue Iris (A Match made in Heaven)

http://www.wired.com/2014/07/hacking-home-alarms I don't trust wireless for security. Lots of copper here, harder to jam the signal. Simplisafe does detect the jamming, but with a cell phone jammer, would who would know? I would recommend getting the Ethernet interface with it and make sure...

    Camera hacked behind VPN?

Don't ever trust these cheap cameras or any IOT device to share my network and have internet access. Like Nayr says, they are hostile and not trustworthy. Full of security flaws, known and unknown. Check out Shodan to see if you show up. I use the parental restrictions in my router to never...

    Best strategy for remote access?

Here I use an outdoor PIR and it's wired to my camera. Milestone emails me 3 photos every time it goes off AND the alarm is set. PIR gets me a few false alarms a few times a year, hot and cloudy days are tough. Took a while to dial in the settings as it's a fine line between false alarms and...

Correct. Or go with a telephoto lens. The biggest focal length is 50mm I've seen on a M12/S-Mount lens http://www.lensation.de/product/B3M50025/ Correction, looks like 90mm, which may be too much...

FOV or angle of view on the DS-2CD2342WD-I

Well, no answers for sure. China can't violate the laws of science. Focal length is focal length. Meaning, it cannot lie. Now if they stuff the camera with something other than 2.8mm lens, then you can't trust it. Unfortunately, the photo is not doing us any favors. It's not perpendicular to...

    Hikvision 2CD2432 PIR Alarm

Here, I tied the PIR to the alarm, then used a RELAY out form the alarm to trigger record. I don't trust the image analysis, PIRs work way better. I did play with it once. I tried to meter and scope it out, but it is not a voltage output. It is likely a sink to ground. If I was going to test...

Anyone messed with Thermal cameras ??

Unless you have big money, forget about Z in PTZ for thermal cameras. They are usually only fixed focal length, due to the nature of the optics, which is pure germanium. The lens is really interesting, they are thick, heavy, and do not pass any visible light.
