POE camera installation - how are you guys running wires?

Inside the house, baseboards are your friends. Outside, the expansion joints in concrete sidewalks can be deepened with a diamond disk on an angle grinder. Wooden fences are a great place to mount cameras. The cable can run inside the fence, then back to your garage through the expansion joints.

    Blue Iris OS Options

Sorry to chime in kind of late, but I've been running W11 on older, non-tpm machines without a microsoft account for six months or so without problem. I used Rufus (Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way) to download the correct ISO and create a bootable usb stick, and told the Windows...

Self driving would be a valuable option for any kind of car. As we get older, being able to drive safely becomes one of the biggest challenges to staying independent. I wonder when it will show up on non-electric cars.

    Auxiliary IR Illuminator for LPR

On my long list of ideas to try is getting a cheap IR laser off ebay to try as a long distance illuminator for alpr. If you want to try, you have to get the right frequency. The cameras don’t see the whole ir spectrum.

Help with BI App on iPhone only connecting when on WiFi

No vpn? I’m just thinking since your BI setup hasn’t changed and you’ve checked your settings, maybe we should be looking at the means of remote connection. Things like expired vpn keys. Any possibility something in between the server and the app on your phone might be awry?

Help with BI App on iPhone only connecting when on WiFi

I’m guessing the update changed an important setting somewhere. It could also be a coincidence where a security certificate expired. I’m away from my computer for another week, so I am just guessing from memory, but under web server, there are some important settings that could screw you up...

blue iris for android phone, how to

Try it w/o vpn first. Start with the simplest setup possible, then get complex. Can you pull up your router gui from your phone? Start with that. If you can, you should be able to see your bi computer connected to the router. If you can’t, you may be on a different ip subnet.

    Looking for advice/guidance

Look on ebay for a good used gigabit poe switch. Managed. They go for almost nothing as businesses and governments shed them to get faster units. Even fast ethernet with gigabit uplinks will serve you fine. I see an Alcatel os6450 -p10 on ebay right now for $40 or best offer. Whatever you...

Dahua DMSS app does not show all cameras

When I used dmss, I recall it had a preference for onvif cameras. I had to do some tricks to get my non-onvif door station to display, even though it was a dahua product. I don’t think I ever got it to display off-brand chinese board cameras.

    Dog wifi camera

The Dahua dmss lite app is a free download. I was using it while I built my system, and it was ok for live viewing. View remotely via Tailscale? I don’t know if it will work with an amcrest camera, but try it.

Pay Attention To Your Surroundings -- January 14, 2025

Have you set up UI3? If so, you should just be able to put the ip address of your BI server in a browser on your phone with the BI port at the end of the ip address, usually port 81. If your BI server ip address were 192.168.1.10, then you’d pull up a browser window on the phone and type in-...

They’d be very attractive if the batteries were better or cheaper. Wife and I could get by with one car now, and it’s tempting to get an electric one since we don’t go more than a couple of miles 95% of the time. But there’s that other 5%… California now turns the power off when the winds...

One of my fails was at the beach, so yeah, humidity. But the other was in the San Fernando Valley, dry as it gets without going to te desert. But we get three rainy months, and that’s enough to kill an rj45 in a couple of years, even inside a housing.

    Malibu Fires

I once heard Vladimir Putin say people do what they get paid to do. This was in the context of the war in Syria, but it applies to homelessness too. If you give homeless people tents, needles, food, money and easy access to drugs, meanwhile overtaxing everyone else, you should expect more...

bidens incredible transition to electric cars

My wife’s great grandfather made electric cars in the 1910s and 1920s, the Baker Electric. They had nickel-iron batteries, which will still work if you put fresh electrolyte in periodically, but they aren’t very energy dense. The recent advances in nuclear fusion make me hope that cheap, clean...

    Malibu Fires

It’s nice they arrested a couple of looters, but the real problem is the legislators and governor who gave them the imprimatur by making theft of less that $1,000 in value the same as a traffic ticket. Why arrest people for stealing when you told them stealing is ok?

    Malibu Fires

And just to rant a bit more, the hills around LA aren’t all that solid. Most of them are more like dirt mounds than stone mountains. So if your house doesn’t burn, it will likely slide during an earthquake. I had a college professor who lived in the Pallisades. Before he bought the house he...

    Malibu Fires

And re your comment about floods, the perplexing thing is we have strict zoning and insurance regulations against building in flood plains. In LA, we have a flood once in 30 or 40 years. But you want to build on a hill that probably burned 4 or 5 years ago? Here’s your permit!

    Malibu Fires

Generally, the fires go uphill. Once they get to the top, they usually don’t keep going. I know this time there was an area on the flats that got burnt, but almost all of these fires were on hilly areas. The areas you’re hearing about, Malibu and Pacific Pallisades, are both built on cliffs...

New to BI - Confused AF and need some help please!

+1 on wittaj’s computer comments. The 6950x and a gtx10_0 is way overkill. Take the money it represents and buy better cameras. For your live monitors you can use very lightweight computers like old hp t620s or intel mac minis running a lightweight linux distro (Lubuntu works well) and a...

    Malibu Fires

I’m actually surprised it took so long. When I was a kid, no one would consider building on the hills around LA because everyone knew they burned every few years. The hills became valuable view lots, but they were also the only land left in a lot of areas. I never understood how they got...
