Fiber instead of PoE, what about power?

Surge protector is only as good as the ground it is connected to. To properly surge protect PoE one needs to route them where the single point ground is connected - usually the main electric utility cabinet. Unfortunately I can't do that. I may have mentioned it in this thread. If someone can...

    EU follies

This is no doubt caused by the war on our border, with millions of refugees and constant stream of associated news. Started by a country that has been promising us the same treatment for last 35 years. People naturally are more supportive of the government in such situation. There are the usual...

Need a outside camera that will not fail.

Everyone focuses on the WiFi because the OP said "the camera eventually looses connectivity to AP". It is true for some reason Ip cameras and WiFi simply do not get along. I've had two WiFi cameras 10m from the access point for 7 years (under a short eave, for all intents and purposes we may...

IP Cameras for Non Internet Networks??

Many people consider the best solution putting all cameras on a separate VLAN with no Internet access, but the problem is that you also do not have direct access to them. You have to use a router (or go through the local server) and the cheapest way are routers built into a managed Ethernet...

I misremembered your previous post. You were talking about WizColor 5449-PRO, that it will be a mixture of features from WizMind-S 5442-S3 and TIOC-PRO 3449-PRO. I somehow remembered it as a new version of WizMind-S 5442. So, my mistake. You as well as the picture mention smart dual light...

Do we have IR illuminated/very dark images of movement comparison between Sony IMX415 and the 4M 1/1.8 sensor used in WizMind-S 5442-S3?

I'm not going to be surprised if I post the first ones once my cameras arrive ;) Oh no, I'm not running at 30fps. But by the camera being 30fps capable at 4K means it has a modern CPU. This often means it is not an older model, therefore the software is often a bit better(if all other specs are...

Thank you , I was actually considering the refurbished 5442 turrets. This info saves me from making a mistake. I'll be going for bullets. I've asked for one of the IPC-B54IR-Z4E-S3 and the updated Q2.2025 version of IPC-B54IR-ZE-S3 (as they are called in EmpireTech store). I hope they are...

    Camera recommendations for Europe

I tend to look at dori distances calculated from sensor size and FOV. The 32mm has IDENTIFY at 39.5m (at 250px/m). It may end up closer than that (25m and 31m) so the motorised zoom is very good. I did read the threads that say you should 4x that for the night. If we want to have that 32mm would...

Do you mean the FOV is smaller? Yes, that's what I need. I need to put these cameras pretty far and be able to zoom in. I wouldn't even mind manual focus, but no one makes these anymore. These should be able to reach up to 40m to IDENTIFY from what I read. Yes. That is understandable. What I'm...

Do we have IR illuminated/very dark images of movement comparison between Sony IMX415 and the 4M 1/1.8 sensor used in WizMind-S 5442-S3?

As in the subject, I've been searching and browsing and I'm having hard time locating any comparison of images in Black & White mode with IR illumination and movement (or even without movement) of any mid range consumer camera that can do 30fps @ 4K and h265 (so we exclude ancient ones) with...

Thank you for a quick reply. Now I see I missed the M Got it. Yes, waiting few weeks is perfectly fine. I'll ask Andy about it. Let me just make sure about one thing. With the white light on detecting a person. Am I right assuming the feature can be switched off? Thanks. Very interesting. I'd...

but wait... didn't you say: (emphasis added) Unless by "base models" you meant what you said in your latest post. So would it be true to say there are basically no 4K IR sensitive cameras that would feature low light sensitivity comparable to these 1/1.2 sensors for visible light? Lets say I...

    Camera recommendations for Europe

I've a had a look in Andy's shop. These 1/1.2 sensor cameras sure are interesting. But I have one question. Do they work with IR Illumination? I don't want any white light Illumination. I see there are none offered with IR Illumination built in, but that is relatively easy to swap I imagine...

    Ethernet Surge Protector OUTDOOR INSTALLS

No bad feelings towards the author, but I have to say this is very bad advice if there is any distance to that device. No, you do not ground the surge protector to a long cable that goes off to your house. First, that wire will pick up a surge from nearby lightning strike. Second, it is useless...

Thanks for your replies. I'll get in touch with Andy once I research these cameras a bit more but I expect shipping costs to be a bit of a show stopper, especially if I wanted to get just one or two initially (for 5+ I imagine shipping on a per camera basis is not that bad). Then over here...

    Camera recommendations for Europe

The typical "go to" cameras recommended on the forum are either completely unavailable in Europe or the prices are absolutely bonkers (yes, $2K for a Dahua IPC-HF7442F-Z-X that sells for $330 in US). In fact if it's any camera with larger pixel sizes the prices start at $1500 and only go up...

Fiber instead of PoE, what about power?

IT as well (Devops engineer). But my dad is an electrician (retired now). I've spent many summers as a young kid and teenager making extra cash helping him on various jobs. Most were wiring new builds, including installing the main utility connections, grounding, lighting rods (although I never...

Fiber instead of PoE, what about power?

This post was not meant as a discussion of fiber feasibility, but on the ways people run power alongside it when they want immunity from EMP (such as caused by nearby lightning strike) and voltage gradients in the soil caused by the same. I'd love to hear what worked, what didn't and so on. I'm...

Fiber instead of PoE, what about power?

I'm considering swapping my PoE setup for fiber on my cameras for reasons of better lightning survivability (lightning just blowing up a camera nearby rather than half of the system as it happened once for me). My cameras are mounted on 6m tall steel poles which are 1.5m in the ground. So...

    Can anyone recognise this camera?

Wow, it has been a while since I played with that camera. Sadly I forgot the exact methods used (no doubt I'd remember if tried again). The goal of rooting it was twofold. One to put OpenIPC, but if I remember correctly I'd not get any "AI" alerting. So I gave up on it And second was to get...

Is ZoneMinder still being actively developed?

I've been using a second screen (on modern gnome) and the Montage feature of ZoneMinder in full screen Firefox. As long as you want to watch the same cameras all the time it is fine. One feature it lacks is cycling between cameras and cycling to one that has an alert, but I'm OK without it.

    PoE surge protection.

Thanks for sharing. I guess you're an example of someone having pretty good SPD setup. I'd also love to hear of experiences of people with less than ideal setups. Hopefully living in places with lots of lightning and highly charged rain. To explain what I mean by highly charged rain consider...

    PoE surge protection.

I'm leaning towards the understanding that shields acting as a giant antennas picked up a nearby lightning strikes. Perhaps the shape of the cable influenced why some cables were affected and not the others. I'll be testing grounds and redoing rj45 on the switch ends to have the shields...

    PoE surge protection.

Thanks. My grounding setup is a bit complex. Initially all 3 buildings had their own grounds. Then the house and the closest building grounds were connected together with direct underground wire. So they are now one ground. Building no 3 is separately grounded. I might change this in future, but...

    PoE surge protection.

Thanks for answering . I have good grounding where switches are located(in all 3 buildings), but there is no grounding where cameras are. I have used foil shielded wire just in case I need it in future, but I haven't got the shields connected at camera side (the Poe adapters don't use shielded...

    PoE surge protection.

I have a system with 10 cameras and 3 L3 managed PoE switches (cheap Tenda TEG5310P). One switch is installed in my house, it has 4 cameras connected via cables that go out of the building and are run on the edges of the roof overhang. 3 have these tiny PoE 48V to 12V adapters and one has...

    Weird glare visible at night.

And the mystery is solved!!! I replaced the red plastic diffuser (pictured below) taking one from another unit and the problem went with it. By this I mean the camera on the pole can see a great picture, while the new one that has the old diffuser now has this glare. It looks like this In...

    Can anyone recognise this camera?

I did manage to get root on that camera by dumping nand flash and replacing root's password in /etc/shadow. Also one can enable telnet by sending the camera this command via the web: tlctrl (so the entire path is http://cameraIP/cgi-bin/hi3510/param.cgi?cmd=tlctrl ). But, the main reason for...

    Can anyone recognise this camera?

OK, I'll reply to myself in case someone lookinh for this info finds this thread. Weird glare visible at night.

I haven't tried moving it. I tried swithing other nearby cameras off to make sure it is not getting any IR shine into it(there is another camera a meter higher on the same pole). I also tried pointing a PTZ camera into its field of view at night and I tried switching off its IR illumination, but...
