    Hearing Aids...

Of all the junk mail I get, hearing aid promotions is by far the biggest single category. They even come enclosed with our telephone bill. Probably all of the old farts here have had friends who have gone through multiple "world's best" hearing aids. No direct help, just agreeing with the BS...

Would a Properly Wired House for Security Cameras Increase its Value?

I have no doubt that my network wiring has code violations. The obvious one is that buried outdoor wires aren't 2 feet down. When I sell, my plan is to pull all of the cameras and leave the wiring. The new owner can then take the responsibility of using it if he chooses.

Need to buy a camera system to detect 1" long insects in a room with no lights.

There are several things at play here, and just focusing on resolution could actually hurt in low light situations. Your's isn't the worst low light situation because what you're looking at is fairly close to the IR lights, but their intensity is minuscule compared to daylight. Years ago I...

Need to buy a camera system to detect 1" long insects in a room with no lights.

With Dahua, this is a case where a lower end camera is a better choice because the better cameras won't trigger IVS on anything but humans and vehicles. Pus, while basic motion detection is close to useless for most cases because of horrendous false triggering, it might work ok in your...

Can 1 cat5e power two ip cams?

I'll add that this one likely does not work with an NVR POE port. (But I don't have an NVR with POE ports so I could be wrong on this.) Also, with this type of device, you're treading very close to the port power limit with a 15 watt (non-POE+) port when the camera IR lights are running full...

    More Mama Fox Videos

The fox also got the rooster (we're out on the country). The rooster, who often attacked people, was perfectly happy to let the fox get the 4 gals first while he stood away and watched. When the fox finally went for him, he tried to fly over the 3' fence but was too fat to make it.

    Cable termination at camera end

I don't think there's a "correct" answer for this. The single biggest failure point I've seen in electronics has been at connectors, leading to my own standard practice of minimizing connectors whenever feasible. On the other hand, I've found RJ45s to be extremely reliable. I've never had one...

    Cable termination at camera end

Incorrect understanding. For conductor type there are 3 types of RJ45s: solid wire, stranded wire, and both solid and stranded. Just make sure you don't use a stranded-only RJ45.

Blue Iris no longer respecting storage limits

Just in case this applies, I've found that if a BI settings menu is left displayed, BI will blow right through the storage limits. I don't have a list of which menus, but know for sure if you leave the storage window open it happens for sure, on my version at least.

    Forum technical problems getting bad?

Most of the bot posts are well written, to the point where I'm impressed. What makes them easy to spot is context. Usually they're the first post from a new member, combined with replying to an old thread, pushing a product, or going off with too many technical details.

    Forum technical problems getting bad?

Great, this could lead to a lot more bot posts here. A much smaller forum I am a moderator for is set that the first post from a new member must be approved before appearing in the forum. If the new user looks legit, his status is changed to unmoderated.

    WTS SOLD EmpireTech IPC-B54IR-Z4E-S3

The shipping cost also works against selling used cameras. Hard to spend less than 20 bucks for this, a significant percentage for a camera costing $100 or less. Andy likely has a contract to ship for half of this or less.

    Blue Iris Dahua NVR

How do you make those videos? Is there something like a screenshot video recorder? Anyway, there's one killer feature in BI'S UI3 that the NVR/smartPSS can't come close to matching. The trigger thumbnails are stacked vertically on the left edge of the screen, and just by hovering over one it...

I use the digital zoom a lot, mostly for keeping track of various animals. I guess a gator would be filling the whole frame anyway :). Use it also occasionally to look at passing vehicles. With the 5442 series, digital zoom is actually useful. We're in a secluded spot and 95% of my triggers...

With BI's UI3, the mouse wheel is always enabled for zoom and the zoomed image can be dragged (panned) with the mouse. Unless there's something I haven't found, in smartPSS, doing this first requires pressing the "+" button and drawing a rectangle, all of which gets reset when crossing a...

    Blue Iris Dahua NVR

Does UI3 have single step capability? If it does, could you point me to it? smartPSS can play and single step backward. The one maddening thing that makes playback and stepping a lot more difficult is that every time the playback hits a trigger, any zoom and pan is lost. Makes for a lot of...

    Blue Iris Dahua NVR

Just a high-level list: BI does better: Real time camera viewing, scanning through clips, timeline playback. NVR does better: Easier initial setup, shows IVS trigger lines, works better for nitpicking clips like single stepping and saving snapshots. Important note, I do not use the native UI...

    US Elections (& Politics) :)

I tried to be clear that I was talking about ONLY the headlines. More people IMO read only the headline and believe that's the story. If the headline does not give a timeline, it's reasonable to assume it's current information. Neither headline reveals what it specifically says is a year old...
