    VPN Primer for Noobs

If you run a VPN the ports exposed to the internet are the VPN ports, NOT the NVR ports. If you run the VPN behind say a cable modem you'll have to forward VPN ports to the VPN server. I agree VLAN is a bit complicated and it does require hardware that can handle it. I've just recently bought...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

The reason why you do not allow direct access to your cameras and NVR boils down to vulnerability. The folks writing the software for these pieces of hardware don't do a good job of providing a secure interface, they don't patch security issues, they write poorly coded WEB interfaces allowing...

    Remote control for Dahua DHI-NVR42A08-8P

Ouch, I was looking at the 4216-4K and the 5216-4k and ASSumed they were remote capable. They have two USB ports with one being USB3 for settings backup? Never occured to me they wouldn't be remote capable but it's true the specs don't mention it. D'oh! Which NVR are we talking about specifically?

Switch Advice (16 POE, 8 non-POE, unmanaged, Gigabit, not loud)

I would suggest a pair of 8port TP-Link managed switches. I have just replaced all of my switches with these managed switches and have one of their 8 port units with POE about to go in - only 4 ports POE. The managed part is helpful in that you get cable troubleshooting, loop detection, and can...

    Trump old man napped

I have someone in my office who caught, and recorded, a woman taking a magnet off of her car for a candidate and cutting it up with scissors. Police arrested the woman and she's currently in the jail house awaiting time with the judge. She hasn't been able to pay her $1K bail and has been there...

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

Thank you, that helps! I have POE switches and injectors, POE on the device itself would be wasted for the same reasons I'm not home running cables back to it. I'm currently using just a single IPC-HFW4431M-AS-I2 which is also a 4mp capable camera, the infrared illumination has been pretty...

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

Ah first I'd heard of a PIR, very interesting tech! How do you like the Dahua NVR? Have you found many shortcomings? Are you using many cameras with it? One thing I've not been able to figure out - can the ethernet ports on the back host more than one camera apiece? If I VLAN my network all of...

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

If the camera is outputting H.265 then no they just need to put the stream to disk, no encoding necessary to have H.265 video on disk in that case. I don't find H.264 to encode better images but it does certainly make for smaller video which serves me well storing video for entertainment...

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

ah so it's not reencoding just dumping the raw stream then, not much to support in that case! It's more CPU intensive to encode and decode but it yields smaller video and isn't too hard for most CPU to decode. <shrug> If I go with an NVR I'd certainly want one that could handle it. As cheap as...

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

am on 4.4.7 x64 and no option but I see they say they support it at least. I'll fiddle with it, I use h.265 on any video I store for myself and really like it.

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

Rencode isn't a huge deal to me so long as the profile is decent and maintains quality, I do wish it used H.265 though. I'm trying out direct to disk, will see if it makes much difference. If I do a PC it will need to be something unobtrusive, I need more PCs like a hole in the head. I'd throw...

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

Sources for hardware? Not seeing any quite that low out on fleabay. Form factor of the Elitedesk in SFF is nice, USB HDD for additional storage? I had considered a NUC, I have a few of those doing duty for Plex and Kodi right now. Don't know what I don't know, so far BI triggers a bunch on cars...

NVR or BlueIris? I think I might want an NVR!

I'm torn here! I'm struggling with the obvious question of how best to record cameras around my house. My thought is I want to put an NVR or computer in a closet somewhere away from my main gear where it's less likely to be grabbed. Whichever will be done will likely have a networked KVM with an...

    Dahua WebPlugin Doesn't work

I use Chrome, when I login to the Dahua camera the live view has an "click here to download and install plugin" link. clicking that brings me to this -> https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nacl-web-plug-in/pbdcmagkbhnjpjlnpibbmggikpedpilc which is the Chrome WEB store. The NACL Web Plug-in...

    Anyone catch traffic from this?

While having the cameras on a VPN is a good idea you need to make sure they cannot talk out on their own. I know some of you get this but allow me to hammer it home. Port forwarding leaves a window open for someone to climb through from the outside. Allowing the camera itself to beacon out...

Dahua Firmware Mod Kit + Modded Dahua Firmware

If they were doing that why do we lose the language with a factory reset? Firmware shouldn't lose anything. It seems like they must make a non-persistent change? Agree that simply making a persistant language change would be best.

Dahua Firmware Mod Kit + Modded Dahua Firmware

Seems like we could maybe extract English language files from some firmware while in operation to stick back after a factory reset maybe?
