The Fed’s Refusal To Cut Interest Rates Is Costing Americans "Trump claims that by keeping interest rates high, the Fed is “hurting people” and preventing Americans “from buying houses”" "By maintaining the current federal funds rate, the Federal Open Market Committee perpetuates its current...

What would happen if America started faking its economic data? As if it hasn't already been faked for a long time? Only need to look at the phony inflation numbers and deficit forecasts. "While there’s no indication the data has been rigged (assertions from the White House aside) – or will...

Balanced budget and no inflationary increase in the money supply. Let the people see how much they're really paying in, instead of stealing behind their back. Not a realistic solution, however, because it's the thieves, liars, and power hungry who migrate to government, while most honest...

Dahua WizColor 5x59-PRO and SmartLight 5x59-IL new series

This is all very interesting. The specs and features make it sound like PRO is the premium line, but as often happens, it's all about marketing. Your comment about the IL line being the continuation of the 5442 looks to be very true. Things like specs for the lenses, light sensitivity...

Something actually went down in price for me. I just bought 1,000 gallons of propane for next winter at 1.99/gal, down from 2.05 last year. A rare exception to the trend.

Am I the only one who can't keep these new models straight? The names have no useful meaning, might as well be random numbers. I need a name + model number decoder for dummies, or somebody who does understand just saying what to buy while I stay in ignorant bliss.

Don't underestimate the manipulations they can do and the games they can play. It wasn't that many years ago when 1% looked like a good rate, relative to the even worse rates.

Does it matter if you use CAT5e for a long run?

Ran across this visual aid today. Looks like the lightning risk is a lot lower on the west coast. In Florida, if the gators don't get you the lightning will.

    Mystery part (SOLVED)

After about 6 weeks the mystery is solved. The red doohickey fell out of the handle of my half inch torque wrench. I'd like to claim that I finally remembered, but the truth is that I used the wrench today, and when ready lock the torque setting, the turn-to-lock part wasn't there. Good...

    Israel attacked by Hamas...

This Israel-Palestine debate reminds me, structure-wise, of something I was involved in. One time when I was a t-ball coach, kid #2 hit kid #1 on the head with a bat. Cut and dry who's innocent and who's guilty, right? Wrong. Digging deeper, #1 had done something nasty to #2, preceded by #2...

Opinion stated as fact? bigred already beat me with a few details of the opposite point of view. With all of the shit propaganda flying around, I doubt that any of us here know squat about the real truth for both of the US's wars right now.

Pacific Power offers optional renewable energy plans. At first glance it sounds like you're being a good citizen to use green energy. When you drill down to the details, it's just solicitation for donations to fund green energy projects, and in one case, fish habitat. I don't understand why...

    US Elections (& Politics) :)

The problem is that no sane person would want the job, we therefore never have the opportunity to vote for a sane person. Applies also to most of congress, governors, and mayors.

I keep track of these solar issues because I'm one of the leeches that has a PV system subsidized by the non-solar customers. Oregon still pays the retail rate for power pushed into the grid. Over time, other states have pulled away from that, paying the lower wholesale rate instead. I...

If Grok thinks that the electricity produced is worth what the consumer pays, it made a big mistake. The only quick example I have is my own bill, where about half of the kWh rate pays for the electricity itself. Most of the rest is the "Delivery Charge", followed by fees and taxes.

Does it matter if you use CAT5e for a long run?

Oregon provides a great example for how lightning can vary a lot within a few hundred miles. No hurt feelings to not read, it's a bit off topic. The weather is defined in a major way by the ocean on the west and the Cascade mountain range about 110 miles inland. The stretch from the ocean to...

Does it matter if you use CAT5e for a long run?

Thought I said that: " I'm not in one of the heaviest lightning areas of the country, so that helps" Just one of many factors in the risk/reward equation. I do happen to be in the most lightning-prone part of the state, and when it happens, it happens big time. One example: "Central Oregon...

    The official "WTF" thread

Heck, if you have a paid off typical middle-class house in Oregon you're likely a millionaire. True in some other states of course, but what's special about Oregon is the death tax exemption is a million, established decades ago and not indexed. That means that heirs might have to sell a...

Does it matter if you use CAT5e for a long run?

Could we frame this as opinion or level of risk tolerance? I've used thousands of feet of unshielded UTP in buried PVC for 7 years, have lightning, and have lost exactly one driveway sensor to lightning. To me it's all about risk and probability. I'm not in one of the heaviest lightning areas...

Does it matter if you use CAT5e for a long run?

Even though I have a few thousand feet of riser cable in buried PVC, I don't disagree with anything TonyR stated above. While the cost difference was certainly a factor, my main motivation was to have the wires color coded. One of several conduits leaving the house carries 8 cables, all...

HUGE RUMOR: Unifi Protect will support ONVIF cameras (like from HIK/Dahua)

Thanks for the correction. 400% error on my part, sheesh. If this were a one-time purchase I'd try it, but with close to 20 cameras I'm not going to take on yet another annual assessment.

Connecting NVR and two POE Switches to Main Switch

I think the way you did it originally is the best. What you have in the previous post is OK too. I use a "monster" POE switch, 28 ports, connected to the NVR. Then I ran out of ports (not all used for cameras) and chained an 8-port switch off of the POE switch for things around the house.
