    PoE Switch Suggestion List

@slippyb - I think wittaj had a typo and meant to say: “Preferred method would be to keep all the cameras off the same network that your internet is on and connect all the cameras to the same switch AND connect that to the BI computer with one internet port and the BI computer connected to the...

I’m about to leave town for several days but I plan to implement your 2) suggestions when I get back. Stay tuned for updates (and I’m sure another question or two :) ). THANKS AGAIN!!!

    VLAN design example

Ok. Awesome. Thanks for the quick reply. I still need to figure out how I’m going to view the cameras but I’m thinking that as long as I have access to the BI PC from my home vlan that will be sufficient. I will be able to control my BI PC from my office to do camera config from it so at this...

    VLAN design example

@reflection (and any others with experience) - I know I went MIA for awhile but I've finally found a little time to work on this. I got the switch running and one camera working in a test scenario. Here's the outline of what i've done so far. I'm slowly learning the Cisco CLI commands but I...

Yep. I’m really excited to get it going. Hoping it will easily handle my ever growing home network needs for years to come. I’ve never had a managed switch at home so I’m looking forward to learning and taking more control of things...

    VLAN design example

Thanks a lot @reflection. I’ve decided to go with the vlan-tagging. I will start with configuring the vlans on the switch. I have your instructions on doing that. And I have decided not to implement any virtual machines on the BI PC. I am just going to get a dedicated Qotom box and run...

    PoE Switch Suggestion List

@reflection can you direct me to the post where you go into more detail? I just got me this on eBay for $110!: Cisco WS-C3750X-48PF-S 48-Port Gigabit IP Base Switch w/ 1x C3KX-PWR-1100WAC I’m about to set it up. I think I may set up the inter-vlan routing sooner than later... But remind me...

So I ordered 5 cams from someone other than Andy. Price difference meant I literally got a free camera. Free DHL shipping was included after I negotiated for it. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Hope I don't get banned from the forum here lol

New RCA HSDB2A 3MP Doorbell IP Camera

Thanks for the input @David L . We plan to have our entryway covered with a turret IPcam saving to BI so it's really not so much a matter of recording video of events. Though 180 FOV and SD Card storage does sound nice as added footage. I will monitor what others say here. We really don't...

New RCA HSDB2A 3MP Doorbell IP Camera

Wow this thread is looooong! So what's the consensus on this doorbell? If I am buying strictly for the 2-way audio (intercom) feature will I be disappointed? I am setting up several other IP cams and a blue iris PC. We currently have a Ring Pro doorbell. It's OK but we find the best thing...

    Review IPC-T5442TM-AS-LED (Full Color, Starlight+)

ok thanks for all the info. I may try one of these in a dark area where I don’t need light all night but would like it on motion. If I do I’ll try to get it working via hubitat motion sensors driving the light. I might be able to skip BI and have Hubitat issue the HTTP commands direct. The...

    3990X & Blueirs thoughts ?

OK yea that's what I thought. I don't think I'll have any of these special use cases anytime soon. I do have 1 Gb/sec fiber internet but I'm thinking having 1G ethernet throughout my LAN will be sufficient for the life of this switch. And I guess I can always buy the 10G module later if...

    Review IPC-T5442TM-AS-LED (Full Color, Starlight+)

Thanks so much for this technical breakdown. I understand now. From what I read here it sounds like the LED model does NOT have the feature to turn the LED light on and off based on motion. Is this correct? If so, then what if another motion detector sends a signal to BI. Could the light...

    Review IPC-T5442TM-AS-LED (Full Color, Starlight+)

I have hubitat as well. And I'm planning to connect my hue floods to it. Along with a couple Hue motion sensors I got. I didn't realize you can have the cams send motion alerts to Hubitat. Let me know how well that works for you... I may do the same in addition to my sensors (they won't...

    3990X & Blueirs thoughts ?

@reflection when you state the above I am taking it to mean that all the NICs from my PC will connect to regular ethernet ports on the switch for the respective VLAN port ranges and I won't use the uplink ports at all. Is this correct? And if so does that mean I am OK to just buy one of the...

This seems like a pretty easy option. But I don't have much on that PC so starting fresh is OK too. I think I may just do that unless the above is actually easier. If I'm starting fresh what's the best and easiest free way to set up the virtual machine? Is the VMware software free and...

Well the only think I currently have on the PC is a Plex server...but I haven't even powered the computer on in over a year.... so I guess I'm not really using the Plex server. I'd be OK ditching it if it made my life much simpler. If I ditch Plex or move it elsewhere that means the PC could...

    3990X & Blueirs thoughts ?

Yea I hate to buy a $150-200 box to run pfsense when I'm already running this PC in the server rack. But I don't want it to be too complicated. I really have no idea how difficult the virtualization aspect will be. And I figured I would probably have enough spare resources. I'd like to...

    3990X & Blueirs thoughts ?

Hey guys - Couple questions for you since you clearly have more experience than me (I have never done virtualization but understand the concept): 1) How hard is it to convert a running Windows 10 machine (i7-4790k, 16GB RAM, see below specs) to a virtual machine to use it as a Pfsense router...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

Have you tried one of the ONVIF doorbells to see how it works? I'm looking for comparisons. Our two way audio with the Ring Pro works but it isn't always perfect. Sometimes slow to load but the new Rapid Ring app has sped it up a bit. My mother's Ring Pro also works albeit a little slower...

Sweet! LTS is releasing an ONVIF compatible doorbell with SD card slot and 940nm IR

Should I get one at all? Ring Pro works pretty well for what it does. I value and use the feature where I talk to people at my door and have a two way conversation. It functions as an intercom. Does that work properly and without much delay with the ONVIF doorbells? If so what is the best model?

Old Telecom guy here... Care to help me choose gear?

OK that's good to know. I still like having the windows machine. This is a perfect example why.... If I need to I might upgrade the processor and RAM only if that's possible... But the windows machine is no longer my daily driver. After reading what I wrote above it sounded kinda snotty...

Haha... yea I decided to be Joe Exotic. I really don't have much need for a PC anymore but I'm glad I still have it for this BI project. That will be a perfectly useful way to send it to the grave lol! I'm writing this on my MacBook which has taken the place of my windows machines I used to...
