Outdoor wire recommendations for POE camera mount on remote part of house? Dumb idea?

Definitely. I will try to make it so it's not too hideous. The wire will mostly be on the back side of the house, so it won't be too bad. And thanks again to everyone! I have really wanted to set up this camera for a while, but the prospect of internal wiring was just way too much for me in...

Outdoor wire recommendations for POE camera mount on remote part of house? Dumb idea?

Good idea, but no basement in that part of the house. So I'm stuck running it around the sides. But it would be nice.

Outdoor wire recommendations for POE camera mount on remote part of house? Dumb idea?

Sidenote: Years ago I experimented with powerline networking, and it wasn't up to snuff back then, but I understand it's gotten much better in recent years. In this current situation, it's probably going to be easier to just run a cat5e/6 cable outside around the house. (There isn't any...

Thank you, guys! This is all super helpful! I no longer dread hooking up this camera!

Outdoor wire recommendations for POE camera mount on remote part of house? Dumb idea?

Hi guys -- I'd like to improve coverage in a remote part of my back yard, and unfortunately, mounting a camera to view it seems like quite a chore. I've got a corner of the house where I can mount a camera, which faces the part of the back yard in question, but the corner is far away from any...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Crashed again today on 5.7.6.8, database corrupted again... now considering drastic measures. I'm thinking of a complete system wipe and/or setting up a different computer as my last attempt on this, and then after that, if it happens even one more time, I will likely just give up. I can't keep...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Thank you both! All sounds like good advice. FYI, crashed again, so I'm rolling back to "highly stable update" 5.7.6.8!

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Noted, and I appreciate your feedback as always. But this is very frustrating, assuming this is the cause of the latest round of instability. I come from an IT background where security patches are very important to apply PLUS how is it that BI has a reputation for lousy patches where people are...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Quick update - I've had two crashes back to back and a corrupt database after updating to 5.7.7.12 (released June 15). That is the only change I made. Thought it would be useful to post the ongoing saga for other people in the future who might be searching for help on a similar situation...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Haha, yep, I was waiting for the weekend to pass. So the update is that the system has remained stable, thank goodness! I think the main takeaways for anyone stumbling on this thread in the future, are IMO: Look for advice and feedback in this forum! :) Don't give up! Thoroughly check your...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

P.S. As an added bonus after installing Intel driver 30.0.101.1692, my CPU usage has dropped a little bit to a fairly steady 19-21%.

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Thanks guys! All helpful comments! Really appreciate it! BTW, wittaj, I looked again at my CPU usage and it's actually sitting at 22%. I had previously said 30%-ish but I must have been looking at it when it was consistently doing more stuff. Just staring at it now, it does fluctuate up to a...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

I'll take a look. My CPU usage has been pretty good though, around 30%-ish average. But can't hurt to review those settings. Also, just uninstalled Bitdefender.

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Thanks guys, as for ghosts, I honestly wouldn't be surprised at this point. But in all seriousness, I did check, double-check, and triple-check the hard drives, files, filesystems, headroom, etc., database (it's all green, but just ran compact/repair -- still green -- and then for the...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Extended SMART test finished, passed totally fine... Summary - all hardware tests passed, plus hardware stress test (CPU + RAM) passed, hard drive tests passed, extended SMART test passed, filesystem checked and passed, Windows diag passed, everything passed. History of stability problems with...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Yes, agreed, thank you, in this case, the BI computer is attached to a fairly decent UPS system with AVR. It's not a sine-wave UPS though, which would be even better. I have one of those, but that one is connected to a file server/NAS I have in another room. This UPS is decent enough though...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Yes, thank you. I forgot to mention that in prior post. All good. Also just finished SMART check -- health status is Good. Checked via command prompt + CrystalDiskInfo + DiskCheckup Also just ran Windows System diagnostics -- all good (and hard drive shows as good in that too) Also just ran...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Quick update: I did further stress tests on the computer CPU/RAM, as suggested, and everything checked out fine. This is consistent with the Dell diagnostics I ran previously which also passed just fine. However, BI went poof again last night at 11:50pm, exact same scenario as the first...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Thanks, yeah, this is hopefully a one-off event. First time this ever happened at least... I'll run some more tests in the next day or two, but cross fingers it was indeed just a one-off and we'll see what happens in the future. The uptime has been great on this machine -- has never crashed that...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

BTW, I'm really annoyed at myself for not having the "Save to file" box checked in the log tab. I feel that would have given me some good clues as to what happened. Note to self: ALWAYS check "Save to file" in the log tab when you install BI!

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Good suggestions, thank you. I will run some more tests. BTW, I did run a complete Dell diagnostic on it, and the system passed just fine. But a Dell diagnostic is not a torture test obviously.

Thanks! Windows 10 Pro, up to date as of today, BI 5.7.6.8 (currently listed as "latest highly stable" version according to BI update screen), Intel Core i5-8500, 16GB RAM. Nothing special, nothing extra installed except antivirus software, very stable machine, no issues so far other than this...

Blue Iris computer poof in the middle of the night - any ideas what happened?

Woke up this morning, Blue Iris machine totally unresponsive, monitor powered off, had to do a forced reboot, can't figure out what happened. All my footage just ceased to record at 12:18am last night. Nothing in the Blue Iris log tab about it, in fact, it seemed to have cleared itself when I...

Desktop Drive for BI Stored Folder?

BI is flexible enough to cover a lot of different scenarios, preferences, and use cases, and your needs might be different than someone else. I personally really appreciate that they designed it with such flexibility. In my case -- currently -- some cameras are less important than others, and...

Desktop Drive for BI Stored Folder?

I've got various non-purple drives working no problem. Some have moved from desktop to NAS to desktop to BI no problem. Any drive can fail. Obviously these drives in this case are not optimal for BI duty, but BI has a good storage management system so you can decide how the drive will be used in...

Best way to plug 5/8 inch holes from pre-terminated cat5 cable runs?

Thank you for that tip about a drip loop. I did not know about that. And yes, the existing holes are more or less protected from water, fortunately. Not perfect though. I do need to go over everything and tweak things. And I might be forgetting something awful. There's a lot I didn't...

Best way to plug 5/8 inch holes from pre-terminated cat5 cable runs?

Thank you to everyone for your feedback. I'm planning on playing around with three options soon -- I've already ordered Coax Seal, I'll go to Home Depot for duct seal putty, and I'll also pick up some silicone calking. Between those three, I think I'll be covered! And next time I run cat5/6...
