    Repurpose security cameras?

I opened up another camera, the beeping one, and it's a Hi3518 CRBCV100 SoC. The reset button on the board is offset from where the hole is in the body, quality build, but I managed to do the reset cycle but with no result. It seems to be fully supported by OpenIPC though, so that's gonna be the...

    Repurpose security cameras?

I've tried to add the camera and tested all the Grain related profiles under IP Camera, I've tested adding ONVIF but it's not showing up. When I scan the network while adding the camera, the network activity light on the camera promptly reacts to the scan, but it's still not broadcasting...

    Repurpose security cameras?

Nice, they even have a port for Raspberry Pi OS, thank you! I'll report back when I've done some tests.

    Repurpose security cameras?

Looks like the SoC is Grain, I'm assuming that corresponds to GrainMedia noted in the list of supported hardware. Not sure which model it is though, does anyone know how to identify the specific model? https://openipc.org/supported-hardware

    Repurpose security cameras?

The cameras don't have a second life unless they're unlocked, unfortunately. Unless someone is actually using this small alarm company and also want 8 year old cameras added to their system. I feel like there's a lot of focus on the cameras quality here - the camera quality is not important. I...

    Repurpose security cameras?

Thanks, doesn't look like they have a Linux version, but I can probably find something. Maybe someone can recommend something from experience?

    Repurpose security cameras?

I haven't really decided what I'm going to do specifically. With the kids, probably take apart a camera, (hopefully) flash the firmware and get the cameras streaming to something. Show the value of knowledge and its environmental and economical implications, but also understanding your own...

    Repurpose security cameras?

This has been bothering me enough for it to peak my interest. When such generic hardware is only a "software fix" away from being open source and it can extend the usefulness and thus the longevity of the hardware, I'm all for it. I think hardware issues like this should be piggybacking on the...

    Repurpose security cameras?

Had I been successful unlocking them, I would have given them away when the projects were done. But yeah, they will be responsibly recycled. Thanks for all your responses!

    Repurpose security cameras?

Thanks, yeah, this was more of a "before you go" project idea while clearing out storage, not something I'll be buying new stuff for. :)

    Repurpose security cameras?

I operated under the assumption that "physical access is total access" would suffice, had there been such a thing as generic software. Reverse engineered firmware is obviously not going to be making its way into my hardware.

    Repurpose security cameras?

The model number is unfortunately useless, it's like "CompanyName0032" on a sticker. The only other marking I found gave no hits on a google search.

Here's the back of the camera.

    Repurpose security cameras?

I overestimated the age of the cameras, they're 8 years old, roughly.

    Repurpose security cameras?

They're not going "into production", I wanted to set up some projects for me and the kids since I already had the cameras laying around. But if I can't control the software side, it's not going to work. I've attached a picture I found that looks like one of the cameras.

    Repurpose security cameras?

They've been spiderweights in storage for a number of years. So what I'm gathering is that there's no such thing as a generic firmware for IP cameras?

    Repurpose security cameras?

Well yes, that's what I meant with flashing with an open source firmware. I have no idea if it's possible, if there's a generic firmware to use or if I'd need something for that specific model.

    Repurpose security cameras?

I did, I've set up an air gapped network to play around with. I've scanned the network using nmap, tested the router it came with, some other router I had, and I set up an OpenWRT router on a Raspberry Pi. Even set it up with the same subnet that the proprietary router was using but to no avail...

    Repurpose security cameras?

I'm not sure how I would go about confirming ONVIF compliance if I can't communicate with them. I'm assuming ONVIF is partly software regulated, and it could be added if you had control of the firmware/software? I'm assuming IP cameras in general will request a DHCP lease from a router either...

    Repurpose security cameras?

The point was to use them because I had them, along with some Raspberry Pi's I have laying around. Doesn't feel right recycling them as they're perfectly fine for lots of projects, and the projects don't warrant buying new hardware.

    Repurpose security cameras?

Hi, I have a number of old IP cameras (10-12 years old maybe roughly 8 years old) from a home security system I had, and I'm wondering if it's possible to repurpose them. The alarm system consisted of the cameras, a wireless router (based on OpenWRT if I recall correctly) and an Android tablet...
