    New system help please

That's what I needed @nayr. Thanks for the insight. I was given a 24" Lenovo monitor I plan to connect to the NVR for viewing or maybe a cable to the tv in bedroom. Glad to hear the laptop would do what I need. Thanks!

    New system help please

Long story, but just this week in one big chunk, my bank gave me about $600 worth of reward points I could use at Amazon or Best Buy. I have an iPhone, and am considering using the rewards for an iPad Air 2. Would it work for this camera system or should I use a pc to configure these switches...

Looking for a PIR (or similar wireless) driveway alarm

If the walkers are a big concern, it said multiple sensors could also be used in series to set a perimeter. that would be cool. I think it could alert by zones so you know which way to point the boom sticks before looking...I..um...mean...which door to walk out..... and yea they seem...

Looking for a PIR (or similar wireless) driveway alarm

I have no experience with this, but it looks promising. http://www.amazon.com/Dakota-Alert-BBA-2500-BBT-2500-DCR-2500/dp/B0083OAASM http://www.dakotaalert.com/catb2b1/product_info.php?cPath=51&products_id=143

    Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard

To clarify, I mentioned I rarely need to charge it, but I do make sure the backlight is shut off since the office has great lighting. And I also shut the switch off at the end of the day....when I remember. The book states: A three-hour charge provides up to 10 days of use when you type about...

    Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard

yes, actually my wife and kids give me a hard time, but while i'm at my desk at work, I have my phone propped up in front of me and it's tied to bluetooth #2. I just basically push a button and I'm typing on my phone. lol. I'm always the one behind on technology, but this is really cool. For...

    Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard

I use one of these every day at work, and it functions well. Rarely need to charge it. Didn't realize they cost so much.

    New system help please

Thanks @nayr. Wouldn't my old laptop be sufficient to set up the devices? I have been considering a larger/newer tablet of some sort due to using iScore at ballgames for scoring of my daughters softball team, but that probably would not work for this purpose?

    New system help please

So here is probably some dumb questions. I'm now assuming that the free switches I was given, and the midspan, and the network I have now decided to build, will require a computer to configure and set up and maintain these devices? My earlier posts mentioned that I only have an outdated laptop...

    New system help please

Sounds good, appreciate that. Since you dropped a 'patch panel' on me and wasn't sure why it was needed, I just did a bunch of reading why I would need the patch panel. I'm so small and really could go straight to the switch, but this info I just found on a Google search from Cisco's site, laid...

    New system help please

Thanks. I think he said he can get me more as they upgrade to larger switches, so it would be good to have some spares. Correct, they are not POE. The IT guy that gave me the obsolete switches said he can get me the SPF modules too that they don't need anymore. When he gets me a third switch, I...

    New system help please

here are pics of the switches that were given to me. I think I can get some more. They are obsolete for work now. The price was right, couldn't I use these at each building (including house) with my fiber even though they are only FE, and not need any media converters? I just need the...

    New system help please

Ya'lls patience with my ignorance is greatly appreciated and your willingness to help is amazing. Mad reps to you fellas! I probably overuse the thank you button by some peoples standards, but I really do appreciate the help greatly! I plan to study and read the above posts overnight. In a...

    New system help please

But I do not have any routers or any network of any sort in my house or any other devices to plug in. Therefore the uplink from the NVR will not be needed? Do I really have to have a switch in the house if the NVR is my sole network heartbeat? So to help me be clear in my own head, my NVR will...

    New system help please

Fantastic explanation for this newbie. I appreciate your patience with me, and I'm getting there. I think my NVR will be my main trunk switch. I do not have anything else to plug in at the house. I have an outdated laptop and no wifi out in the boondocks where I live. lol. My apologies if I'm...

    New system help please

I reread your posts and I don't think I have a main backbone switch you mention. I don't have any internet or anything else hooked to this network. It will only be a simple NVR at the house and a switch at the barn and a switch at the garage. So do the switches in each remote building need to be...

    New system help please

Well that's a great idea. Basically protect very well in conduit or above ceiling in barn all the way to this adapter and then a short fiber patch cable to the switch that could be replaced down the road if there ever was a problem with the exposed fiber. Great pointer! Thanks!

    New system help please

I thought LC looked the best, but could not find an LC switch at a decent price like what was in my link above. That switch only supports ST and SC. I only have a media converter at the NVR because the LTS NVR i'm eyeballing does not have the SPF uplinks. I hope I said all that correctly. I...

    New system help please

so let me see if I got this right......I believe I should use MMF since distances are short for fiber. 200ft max. start at the house where the NVR is located. -NVR > Ethernet > media converter in house > fiber > switch > ethernet > camera/s -repeat same thing for garage Is there a preference...

    New system help please

In regards to the Lightning and surges you guys are talking about, we had a squirrel take out a phase in our substation last week. It single phased briefly till the safeties took it down. And he got fried of course. We only tripped a few breakers on our subs in the building, but before going...

    New system help please

Sounds like a good plan @nayr. I just sent a message to a network friend at church to see if he terminates fiber. I also know an electrician that terminates fiber too. I could hire him on the side probably. He normally does industrial. I also plan to run large conduit in case I need to bring...

    New system help please

Thanks @nayr! Great thoughts! I have done some Google searching for places to purchase pre made fiber, but do you have anywhere you recommend? I seen monoprice has some, but their longest was 150' online. My longest run to the barn would be around 200'.
