Anything at all to be done about surges from lightning?

@t_anderson: This thread is 1.5 years old, so the people who were originally following it may not be around or paying attention anymore. That said, in the US (except for certain special applications) most places use three conductors for 110-120V (standard for small appliances): Hot/Live/Phase...

ip camera keep disconnecting/ network/ bandwith

According to the calculator I linked (http://www.stardot.com/bandwidth-and-storage-calculator <--in case you missed it) H.264 on high setting, 1.3 Megapixels, 15fps for 1 hr will use 1.9GB of bandwidth, 5fps for 1 hr will use 0.6GB, and that number will be higher or lower if you use variable...

ip camera keep disconnecting/ network/ bandwith

So he doesn't have a router, or he's unable to connect the NVR to the router? I don't think you would be able to connect a USB network device and it just work--would probably need to configure it, and that would require some interface in the UI or access to the command line. I could be wrong...

    Opening Ports vs VPN

As far as I know, as long as you only expose the cameras via port forwarding, there shouldn't be any risk other than the camera's feed and/or controls being accessible outside the network. I suppose the cameras could be hacked and used as an attack vector for the rest of the network, but that's...

Nvr, Ip cams, Router and poe switch setup?

Oh, thought the non-PoE version still had ports for cameras. Yes, it's the same as my second configuration, though he doesn't specify how he connects the router to the NVR. Ah, yeah, should probably connect the router to the port it normally connects to--the NVR should be able to find the...

rtsp - can someone explain how to use multiple cameras via portforwarding?

Pretty much stopped reading after this--your TV isn't accessible outside of the network, unless you forwarded some port on your router to your TV... Slow scan, random ping, I'm sure there are other methods. SSH and telnet being disabled doesn't matter outside the local network, btw, unless the...

Nvr, Ip cams, Router and poe switch setup?

You could connect the uplink port on the switch to any of the camera ports on the NVR, and the network port on the NVR to your router. Or if you want direct access to the cameras over the network, you can connect the switch to your router and connect the router to one of the camera ports on the...

SMTSEC 5MP Low LIght 1/2" Sony IMX178 Dome

As far as the dome goes, do you think car wax or plastic polish would have fixed your issues with scratches, etc.? I waxed my old scratched up glasses and it cleared them up pretty good, though they're glass lenses--plastic polish might be the better option in your case. I guess it doesn't...

Good inexpensive cameras for DIY home surveilance system?

Alright, don't need raid0. Wasn't planning on using it for the boot volume, but if it's that unreliable and unnecessary I guess I'll skip on it altogether--it was going to be on a UPS though, regardless. This'll be a dedicated, low power machine just for recording--I might consider doing VMs...

Good inexpensive cameras for DIY home surveilance system?

Hi, I'm thinking of putting together my own system but I'm on the fence about which cameras I should get. I don't want an NVR, and would prefer cameras that can be controlled by and record to a Linux server, must support PoE. Here's what I'm looking at (sort of in order of preference), feel free...

Not worth the time or trouble.

Just wanted to point out that, as with many things, the ArchLinux wiki has instructions for setting up ZoneMinder. Don't know if they work or not (haven't gotten any cameras yet or set up a VM to test with yet), but it's worth a look if you haven't seen it and you're having difficulty.
