OK thanks! It looks like a good plan.

Ah.. I see. Thanks. I do currently have this sitting around, would it work? Nevermind.. not varifocal right? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RHQGS8V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Camera on mailbox 6x6 post

It camera would be at a slight angle so that provides it a bit more room. That really is the simplest solution. So it looks like I could go with the 2MP or 4MP depending on the focal length I need? 5241E-Z12E (2MP 0.002 Lux@F1.5) 5442E-Z4E (4MP 0.002 Lux@F1.6)

    Camera on mailbox 6x6 post

See the photo in the first post for a similar mailbox setup but my newspaper box is flush with the sides of the post. The post is 6" so the width of the newspaper box it 6". The inside is about 5" wide and 12" deep. It is made of what looks to be 1/2" wood. I'm thinking I would pull the side...

Thanks. That answers that. LOL So I guess I'm back to possibly deconstructing a varifocal.

So in the side of the empty newspaper cavity I could drill a hole to accept the ball. And possibly the IR lights likewise. I suppose the question I need to then look at is if 2.8mm works at 20ft.

Agreed that people can be oblivious. I could possibly mount something like this to the vertical post and as you suggest, paint the housing white: https://us.dahuasecurity.com/?product=eol-4mp-ir-rugged-exterior-network-camera-m12-28mm

With a pinhole camera I suspect I'd need to essentially build-it-out with a suitable lens, if possible. So maybe I can find a tear-down example of a Dahua/Loryta and have it fit in the space I have.

Thanks all for suggestions. There are some street lights so I might get away without needing IR and rely on reflection. The cameras recommended would be perfect if my camera placement restrictions were not a problem. I wonder if I could deconstruct the camera body to make it fit in a tight space.

Thank you. Having a camera 'hidden' is possibly the biggest problem. Back to the drawing-board I think.

    Camera on mailbox 6x6 post

I suppose my plan-B could be to use a camera mounted to the house with a higher zoom and point it towards a turn-around area of the road.

    Camera on mailbox 6x6 post

Yes.. I might need an LPR-level camera. I just don't have the need to run LPR software. I'm thinking that vehicles will be about 20 ft away as they pass if the camera is angled towards the road. So the lens choice will be important? I have existing Dahua with a 10-120mm lens but is is sort of...

Correct no LPR. I simply want it legible for later investigation if an event occurs.

    Camera on mailbox 6x6 post

I added a more accurate photo that closely matches what I have. Unfortunately I don't have an option of any nearby vegetation. Possible the best option might be to mount a camera within the newspaper box and have a hole out the side?

I'm not not going to worry about LPR.. I only want the plate legible if needed at a later point.

    Camera on mailbox 6x6 post

I'm looking for ideas and suggestions. My goal is to have a POE camera mounted externally to my wood 4x4 mailbox post which sits next to the street, the house is 125ft from the street. The camera should be seen as innocuous and ignored by anyone looking at it. I should be able to route the...

For those who are running CAT externally are you taking any network precautions? Someone could simply plugin and have internet access without precautions. My main concern would be for someone having access resources on the home network. I've placed all cameras on a dedicated switch and a POE...

I need to deal mainly with VA,MD,DC plates. VA and MD have a lot of variations and some even start with two really small vertical letters.

And I like that option because vehicles will have to slow at the end of the street, less motion blue. Ideally I would place it at the curb concealed on the mailbox post pointing west. But running cable is the pain.

option 2 with zoom increased as you suggest. (blue line is existing utilities) option 3 with zoom increased as you suggest.

The 3rd location would be from the house to that location. I would thread the needle between two trees.

Where I show it, it would slightly be concealed by a tree behind it. Closer to the street where you show it, it is more likely to get vandalized or the neighbor runs it over with their car. I get about the same angle to the street from an upstairs window, so I may even go that route. Burying...

I got it for another area of the yard but I'll test it out since I already have it. I agree a spot would be better. Dedicated License Plate Cam project

My camera location gives me plenty of power options and I can easily have multiple POE runs if needed; or 120v if needed. Any idea why lens would specify 1.3MP, 2MP, 3MP etc if what appears to be the important info is that they are made for 1/3 ccd's? I'm thinking of a 10-120mm lens to give me...

My main concern is moisture, but I think you're right that the heat from the camera will likely be enough to keep moisture out. I'll check out the prices.

It definitely looks to be the right choice for the price. I'm thinking I'll also get an enclosure with heat and fan for it.

Excellent thanks. Sticking with a more well known brand seemed a wise choice as well. Dahua it is. I also picked up an IR flood that is supposed to reach 300ft. I'll do some tests with it. I'll probably get a call because the police helo complains about it. LOL
