    SoftEther VPN Server

My first post in this forum - http://www.snbforums.com/threads/need-advice-on-vpn-routers.34672/ - discussed my need to find a vpn router. My needs are very simple. I am the only user. I need to connect remotely to view and manage one security cam. When I connect, no one will be using the...

Most stable solution for wireless feed?

I confess, I don't understand the hostility. I suggested an alternative way to get good wireless connections at low cost (because you mentioned low budget) and save you $50 per camera, and you mention Sricam (which I never brought up)? I apologize for trying to help.

Most stable solution for wireless feed?

For example, these - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833999030 can be screwed into the camera to replace the antenna that comes with the camera, at a cost of $20 per camera. So can these - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833998208 He said he had a...

2032 PoE Setup Question - Please help

I would use junction boxes so the wires aren't dangling, but yes, you plug in the ethernet cable to the camera and to your PoE switch, and you're done.

Most stable solution for wireless feed?

We used to use tennis ball cans as directional antennas to pick up wireless networks from quite some distance. I would think it would be easier and cheaper to get directional antennas than it would be to get a directional access point. http://www.newegg.com/Network-Antennas/SubCategory/ID-3373...

    Need more advice

I think I may have answered my own questions here - https://ipvm.com/calculator They don't have the 6mm version of the CMIP3042W, but they do have the 4mm version. Plugging in the numbers there, it looks like I'll have no problem reading plates during the daytime and adequate capture at night...

    How does a PoE/12 V camera work?

I can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere. Some cameras have both a PoE connector and a 12 V connector. From my reading, it appears that most PoE switches/injectors provide 48 V. So, how do these cameras work when using PoE? Do they step down the voltage to 12 V? Do they use an...

    Need more advice

I'm still thinking through what I want to do with the garage cam project. My original thinking was that I might catch evidence that would help capture bad guys who drove through our neighborhood or walked around trying car doors. I have a unique advantage, because my house sits beside the...

    Question about PoE switches

Ouch! That was an expensive lightening strike. Thanks for the advice on the switch. I had pretty much decided to go that way since I like to couple parts from the same manufacturer whenever possible. It makes dealing with warranty issues easier and it's more likely that the parts will work...

    Advice: Built-in POE vs. Switch

I had the same idea - to put the PoE switch in the attic - until I thought about it. There is a reason professionals put electronic equipment in rooms with massive coolers. Electronic equipment suffers from shortened life when subjected to temperature higher than 80 degrees (about 27C) for...

BlueIris causing hard lockups on new server (Solved)

Re: BlueIris causing hard lockups on new server Sure, but you could have easily punted and told your boss you needed to bring in a specialist. Instead, you stuck it out and got it working. That's commendable.

2 way audio over the internet

You don't want your video/audio traveling over the internet, because your equipment would also have to be exposed to the internet. You can setup a vpn server at the customer's location, then connect each remote site over a VPN tunnel. That gives him full access to the video and audio at those...

What type of cable do I need to connect my cameras? Cat 5? 6? Low voltage?

Normally they are placed every 100 meters, so you only need one. Since you only have 106 meters total, I would put it somewhere that's convenient. For example, if you're trenching the 350 feet, I would run pvc pipe large enough to easily run the cable through, put a junction box somewhere near...

2 way audio over the internet

Depends on the connections and intervening routers. You should be able to do it using VPN tunnels so long as the locations are in areas that have robust connections.

What type of cable do I need to connect my cameras? Cat 5? 6? Low voltage?

Maximum length for cat5, cat5e and cat6 is 100 meters (328 feet). Usually this problem is solved by putting a switch in the circuit, which will boost the signal. You can try running cable only since you're only 6 meters past the maximum, but no guarantees the performance will be satisfactory...

    Question about PoE switches

I'm starting to get an idea about what I'd like to have. After extensive research I've rejected wifi as an alternative. Too many problems with camera capabilities and networking capabilities. I found a slick little wifi setup from Lorex, but it would cost more than buying one camera and a PoE...

Looking to build a IP based camera system for home.

Take a look at LTS. There's a guy named @milkisbad here that sells them, and his prices are pretty good. For example, I've got my eye on this camera: CMIP1142W-6 for $159. 4.1MP High Definition, 2688x1520P@20fps, 6mm Fixed Lens, True WDR 120dB, 3D DNR,BLC, H.264 Zip+ Ready, 1 Matrix IR up to...

    Dome vs. Bullet

So I CAN plug it in to the router rather than requiring an NVR? Can I access the cam directly? Or do I need to install software to view it? Would that allow me to access it with my smartphone?

    Dome vs. Bullet

Distance isn't an issue for me. It's less than 10 meters from my garage to the curb on the opposite side of the alley. And my security lights are two LEDs that are 120W equivalents, so I may not even need to use night vision. They are triggered by any motion in the alley.

    Dome vs. Bullet

Thanks. That clears that up. How does the smartphone app access the camera? There has to be some sort of communication protocol. Wifi? Cellular? Ethernet? That's what I don't understand. Can I plug an ethernet cable from the camera into my router and view it that way? Or does it have to...
