As alastairstevenson pointed out, you can mount (temporarily) NFS share to /tmp/nfs (I suggest NOT to mount on /tmp, as there may be open files in it).
First, create a directory on your Ubuntu machine where you will store firmware file, copy file and export it over NFS, say,
