    If you really are a "master tinkerer", and don't mind some minor setup, pfSense is where it's at. I have 9 VLANs running on a 10GbE backbone. I'll never use anything else.

    Another pfSense user here. I'll never use anything else. If there's ever a problem with setting anything up, there's always a youtube vid about it. I've gone overkill with a Xeon E3 CPU and a 10GbE backbone. Multiple VLANs, etc.

    Yeah, I like having mine closer to my house away from the road too. Less of a chance of people messing with them. That's a good idea, though my LPR cameras are the 8 to 32 mm lens versions, so even with a big 4 car garage, I'm out of space before I max out the distance.
